I know its the rule of thumb to say that all east German athletes were doped. Though it has come to light in recent years that not all of the athletes in the system performed better on drugs. Heike Drecshler was supposedly one case in point who performed poorly whilst doped, compared to when she was clean.
Anyway I have been thinking about the East German distance runners, Hans Jorg Kunze, Werner Schildauer and Waldimir Czierpinski, aswell as Thomas Meltze the steeplechaser. These guys picked up medals in major games and in the casse of Kunze and Schildauer they were around a relatively long time. If they were doping they were never caught and I would be curious as to what they would be taking anyway. After all isn't it presumed that steroids and growth hormone, the main drugs adopted by the GDR have little effect on distance men?
Even more interestingly I looked at the world age bests and Kunze was running sub 14 for 5k as a 16 year old and something like 14.25 as a 14 year old, I know they had selection procedures and youngsters were quickly streamed into sporting excellence clubs but this seems like a guy with amazing talent to me. He may well have gone on to use drugs but just maybe he was clean. Thats what is so sad I guess, there were clean athletes in the GDR who will never get any kind of recognition because the whole system was tainted.
Whats the opinion out there, were these guys way dirtier tha those they were competing gainst or did our cold war propoganda machine make them out to be the evil cheats from the iron curtain?
