The consensus here seems to be that OAR was great and ATC is bad.
Why?
My thoughts...
You all read OAR when you were younger and had been exposed to far fewer books. And fewer still of any quality. OAR was also one of the few books that discussed something you were interested in and as a result, you tended to overlook the flaws in the book - overwrought prose, poor character development etc.
You then pumped this book up in your mind so much that even when smart people told you it was a crap read it on the beach during the summer book, you denied it. You constant need to defend the book caused you to identify with it all the more. You became emotionally invested in the book and as a result the book became better and better in your eyes.
Now you have read more books, have more interests, have seen a naked girl's boob. When you reed ATC you have a broader base of books to compare it to, more and varied interests so you are not so emotionally connected to it and more mature. With this new background, even though they are very similar books, you are in a better position to recognize the crap that they are.
Since you have defended the original book for so long, you are unable to deny the praise you gave the original book and so you hold onto the belief that the 1st one was good.
