Georgetown

They took Sandy Roberts over Dan Nunn, winner of the IC4A race, so it is obvious that he didn't start (was sick?) or dropped out. Also, Levi Miller is not shown in the results either (injury, sickness?). Also, Taye faded badly over the last 2K. He was running in about 100th place, ended up last by over 2.5 minutes, so he obvious took one for the team, as without him, Hoyas don't enter into team scoring.

Taye dropped out and then came back on the course and jogged to the finish from what I heard. Great run for their top 4

what he was 25 minutes at 8k?

Taye stopped running, cut the course and then was told by his coach that he needed to finish. I didn't protest but hope gtown( a catholic school) does the right thing and dqs themselves.

That is an interesting point. What if he did cut the course, but still finished last? He didn't actually gain any competitive advantage, still losing by 2+ minutes. Is that really an advantage?

I bet the Gtown coach had a looooong talk with his runners on the bus back to the hotel.

it makes a difference because gtown only had 5 finishers. had he dropped out and not finished they wouldn't have gotten 13th as a team

What does Gtown being a Catholic institution have anything to do with their integrity? In case you haven't noticed, the Catholic Church has a pretty shitty track record as of late in that department.

Besides: he got back on the course at the point where he dropped and jogged in to the finish. Running 37min obviously isn't giving him any extra places.

Remember the 2004 trials in the women's steeple when the leader went around one of the barriers and was DQ'd? The officials said if she had turned around and gone back over that skipped barrier, she wouldn't have been DQ'd. Same thing here: he picked up where he left off.

Not if you've already left the course, in which case you've taken yourself out of the race.

What happened to Miller and Sandy Roberts? Was it food poisoning or something? Seems pretty crazy that 3 from one team dropped out.

this is interesting in that a similar thing happened to william and mary a couple of years ago. in that case, the W&M runner didn't walk/jog to the finish to just be the last finisher and give W&M an official team score. as a result, W&M didn't have a team place (if i remember correctly they would have been in the 20th-25th range if you just tacked on a last place finisher).

i tend to feel like it's fair to simply allow a team to tack on a last place finish when something like illness or injury would otherwise keep the team from having an official score at nationals. that didn't happen for W&M though, so if the georgetown runner really did leave the course, it seems like it would be inconsistent to allow an official team score for georgetown. at the same time, the W&M runner a couple of years ago didn't actually walk across the finish line so there is a difference.

one last thought - it does seem like the NCAA would not want to force injured athletes to walk a mile or two just to be the 5th scorer on paper. so i would support an official policy allowing a penalty score of last place to fill out any team's scoring. it's just too bad for W&M that such a policy was not in effect a couple of years ago.

If a guy doesn't finish, there's no way he should get credited with finishing, nor should his team. Seven guys start the race -- if only four finish, give me a break, the team does not deserve a score. It's not fair play to award that team a place ahead of other teams that actually got five runners to finish. What's next - a 3 man relay gets points at the NCAA's because the last guy pulls out?

Answer me this... why did he drop out in the first place? He split 25:06 through 8k... people who split that finished as high up as 102. Could he really not handle that last mile?

You, as a coach, have 30 minutes after the results are posted to protest. After that the results are final! So, the results are FINAL asshole.

I actually agree with College Coach. The last G-town runner didn't run the final small loop the 10k runners do on their second lap. He just stopped running prior to where you turn into the last loop and started to head to their tarp. When Henner realized what was going on, he yelled at the kid to finish the race. Unfortunatly - there were no officials in this area to DQ the kid for cutting the course.

Henner knew he didn't run the loop. The kid should have never showed up in the team results. Gtown should not have a team score, let alone be 13th. I don't care what you say about no competitive advantage gained, the kid cut the course (and the coach was in the know about it), end of story. The rules are the rules - you follow them or you are DQ'ed.
