Who cares? Take that uncompetitive stuff elsewhere.

Good Point. Thats exactly what Asafa Powell says to Bernard Legat.
knowing carpenter it wouldn't even be a contest. Jurek and Krupicka just run long long distances because they are incredibly slow at shorter more standard distances. Carpenter could as least be competitive in short events.

haha it amazes me how retarded some people are concerning ultrarunning. how does a 2:38 marathon pr for jurek and a 2:45 CR at the highest paved marathon for taco make them slow? it doesnt matter what would happen at WS because that trio would never run it at the same time. krupicka will hopefully get in for 2008 and as far as i know carpenter hasnt expressed any interest.
please, these guys couldnt finish in top 100 NCAA DI meet!
well, maybe Carpenter but not top 25!
I'll bet on Jurek.
There are better ultra runners that would make it more of a competition, such as Meltzer.
top 100, are you kidding me? Jurek and Krupicka couldn't even qualify for the D1 nationals. Hell, Krupicka's 5K is as by his own admission is only 16 plus minutes.
this sounds like a broken record
Krupicka ran 2:45 going up a mountain. His entire training is on the trails. 5000+ feet elevation gain/loss. He could run 2:20 on a flat marathon no problem.
Alan
Nippert owns them all.
Problem is, Nippert's a trail 'tard.
I agree that Carpenter would own them at sub-marathon distances, but the OP didn't ask who would win in a marathon; he/she asked who would win over a 100 mile trail race, more specifically Western States.
I think if you take the altitude factor out Carpenter loses some of his advantage (WS isn't at high altitude). Krupicka and Jurek have never run a bad 100 mile race. Carpenter has seriously crashed and burned over the 100 mile distance before.
Carpenter and Krupicka's Leadville times are clearly superior to Jurek's WS times (Leadville's generally considered about an hour slower). So, I say Carpenter, Krupicka, then Jurek. But, I don't think Krupicka's been around long enough for us to know his true potential. He might ultimately be better than Carpenter over 100 miles.
At last an intelligent response regarding Ultras!!
I agree, Krupicka takes Jurker (which is saying a lot, SJ will probably be ultrarunner of the year again), but Carpenter is probably still out of both of their reaches...are any of them running the North Face 50 in a couple of weeks ($10,000 first place)?

Nope. No way. Not close.
how would Dean Karnazes fare. He is the best runner in the world.
I've heard that Carpenter is planning to run, Uli Steidl (2:13 marathoner) is the favorite with WS100 champion Hal Koerner also entered
carpenter will beat steidl. steidl only won the seattle qualifying race by 12 minutes over phil kochik (5th at WS this year) and was heard complaining that the course was too hard.
On average trail races and ultras don't have the same depth as track or collegiate races but the top runners are still really good. Most have solid road and track credentials before they went to trails and have beaten 2:20 marathoners. While they might not be able to compare well on the track, if the D1 XC field were to race Pikes it would be a very different story.

So what? The top 25 NCAA guys probably can't finish in the top 10 of a 100 mile trail run at altitude. See assumed Asafa Powell quote above.
