If it was nothing but shorts and shoes, how fast would the marathon record be? No pacers, no gels and not even water along the way. How much different would that time be?

sub-2:08.
i drank water once in my PR marathon, and it wasn't even particularly cool (60s and 70s). you will probably say, well your 2:31 is certainly nowhere near world-class, but I would counter that it was pretty darn close to my maximum, so i imagine someone who has run 2:04/5 could still run sub 2:08, especially if the temp was in the upper 30s/lower 40s.
Running without water sure has served Salazar well in his later years.
Yeah, I would agree, only about 2 or 3 minutes or so, taking into acount that the weather is good and the course is as easy as one you might expect a WR on. I ran 2:32 without taking water, and then 2:28 taking gatorade. Same race, same training and pretty similar weather.
Wow, so Peters, and all those other guys from the pioneering days could have run 2:12-2:11?
