2002: Evans Rutto ran 4:12 on the 23 mile of the London marathon to pass a fading Martin Lel.

That is a single mile, not a 5km, although it is a very good example/choice. One problem with a 'best' mark is that it could be made on a downhill and/or downwind section. If you want to look for a very fast section look at the Olympics from 35km to the finish -- 4:3x/mile, which is why he was going to catch deLima anyway (no matter the idiot attack).
Another stat is to find the fastest closing 2.195km. Also note that the closing 300-500 meters in Chicago were very fast for Adere. I am not sure that I have every seen a race close that fast (for the men you would need to put in the approximately 11% male/female differential). In the mens race the two were hammering the finish. There is a spot on the course that you can identify (where the double yellow and a dashed white line converge). The men did 32 seconds and Adere did 32-33 seconds. Assuming that the men were finishing in 4:50/mile (290 seconds/mile or 72.x/400m), then Adere was approaching the mens equivalent of 258/mile or 4:18 pace. Then men were sprinting as best they could and were probably going 68/400m, or Adere ~ 61. This is on the same scale as Lel's finish, which as also STELLAR (but I did not see that finish).
Believe Steve Jones kicked in a sub 13.50 5km split between 5 and 10km in the Chicago marathon in 1985. He passed half way in about 61.30 before slowing to a still respectable 2.07!!
You must be talking about another race- Evans Rutto's debut was Chicago 2003.
Some math guy would have to chime in but splits not normally taken might yield the fastest 5,000 meter segment ie 16 to 21K, or 12458 to 17458m or somesuch.
I believe Khalid had the fastest 5K split at one point...though I maybe mistaken in that it was the fastest 5K split from 35 to 40K ever (sub 14) anybody help on this???
Any time under 14 minutes for a 5K would mean a 4:30 mile pace, which in turn would mean a sub 1:58 marathon if someone could maintain that for the full marathon.

Does anyone have the mile split from New York this weekend when they all took off like scalded cats down 1st Avenue?
It was 4:25, I think.
Baldini ran 29 flat from 30k to 40k at Athens. I don't have a 5k split.
I see it rumoured that Geb ran the last 5k at Berlin this year in 14:16.
Baldini split 14:13 from 35k to 40k according to his Wikipedia page.
I think that he might have run his fastest 10k from 32.2 to 42.2. I seem to recall that he really got rolling near/before the 35km mark. Can anyone else dreg up more? I think is last 2.2 was a little faster than the 5km from 35 to 40.
