I was just trying to get some advice for the coming spring and my attempt at my first marathon. I am currently a junior competing in collegiate track and XC. I have PRs for the 5000m in the high 15s and in the 8k I am currently in the low 26s and hoping to be high 25s by regionals. I will not be running track this spring because I will be taking an engineering co-op and will not be at school.
I was thinking about maybe doing indoor track and then training really hard for this marathon (Flying Pig marathon in Cincinatti). I have ran high mileage in the past (averaged close to 90 for the end of the summer into the season with a peak of 98) and have handled it well. Is this marathon a good idea? I figure it will be a good goal to train towards since I won't have the track races to peak towards and the strength I gain from my training will carry over to XC. I would then take pretty much all of May off and get building base again in June. Anyone else done this? Is this a decent idea? Would it be unreasonable for me to shoot for a time of sub 2:40 if I got my 8k under 26? Thanks for your help.
