I have been doing a lot of research and have found out there are many college teams in which one coach coaches both the men and the women. Is it better to have at least one coach of the each sex or does it not matter?

It's better to have one for each just because of the numbers
You may have 15 or 20 guys on the CC squad
and another 15 or 20 women
Who can Coach 40 runners and have time for all of them?
Depends on the Coach
Some prefer to coach only guys,
some prefer to coach and run with the women
Some will only coach a winning team
and if one team is stronger they will pawn
off the other team to an associate or assistant
I run D1 in college (womens) and our coach is a woman and she is VERY authoritative. She could care less about crying/periods. Most would actually say she's colder and more intimidating than our men's coach. Our men's coach is very personable and understanding, our women's coach is very stern and straightforward with her athletes.
I had a female coach and a male coach and the only difference I saw was that the male could get away with being an ass and the female coach would get berated for the same behavior. It seems that we give way more authority to a male even if he has the same qualifications as a woman. Female athletes tend to be harder on female coaches than they are with male coaches.

Are you talking about Gina?
Let's say the head coach is a guy and he basically coaches both teams. Would it be beneficial to have a female assistant around or does it not matter?
Only if you want the team to win.
