Does anyone know what Alberto Salazar's times were like in high school, or college for that matter? I can't find his PR's under the 5000 anywhere. Anyone know of his mile PR? I just read Duel in The Sun and I'm pretty curious.

One pb you likely won't find is for a 3 mile high school road race they used to have in Spring Bank Park in London.
I think Salazar's record from the late 70's on this course was like 13:50. I was in the race when Dave Reid broke it in 1981 running mid 13:40's I think. I think I ran 14:11.
Salazar's 10,000 PB is 27:25, 13:11 for 5,000, 2:09:21 for the full.
His NYC 2:08:13 was on a course short by 148 meters and I know there is a whole thread on how that happened.
Salazar never ran Springbank when he was in high school.
I'm pretty sure he had the course record that Reid broke.
It was a long time ago, I've tried to find old Springbank results before with no luck.
I will call Dave Reid tomorrow and report back. He will know for sure.
Are you from Ontario?
No.
I didn't say he never ran Springbank. I said he didn't run it in high school.
I know all the big names ran the 12 miler or 4 1/2 miler; Bill Rogers, Jerome Drayton etc. A lot of the Michigan guys ran the 4.5 miler.
I"m pretty sure Reid broke the high school record and that it was a very big US name I thought was Salazar.
I think he went to high school in Mass. so it wouldn't have been a stretch. SOunds like you may be more sure than me though! are you in ORegon?

I ran Springbank in 1975 and I definitely remember seeing Al Salazar from, I believe, Wayland (sp?), MA in the results for HS 3 mile. Had to be THE AlSal. That would be about the right age for Salazar.
Thank you Steve Hoag! I'm not cracking up!
Salazar was a very big deal even in 1981 and it was a buzz that Reid broke his record. Top ten high school boys got a silver spoon, I was 9th in the race Reid won.
SHorter or Drayton won the 12 miler in 1975.
HEre is a pic taken Sept. 28, 1975 so you would have been there that day:

I'll take your word on it. You were 5th in the 12 mile 56:34. Salazars name doesn't appear in either the 12mile or 4.5 mile results.
I said he did the high school 3 mile as did Steve Hoag.
That's why you don't see him in the open 4.5 mile or 12 mile results.
It would be great if someone could post results from the old Springbank races. It supposedly was the second most competitive road race in North America after Boston.

How about the high school 3 mile, which is what everyone is talking about?

I ran the "12" mile (actually a little short of 12M, as they acknowledged). I saw in the program Al Salazar's name and Wayland, MA in the High School 3 mile. Don't remember, however, if it was a results section or list of entrants for 1975. My memory, like everything else, isn't what it used to be!! I will try to dig up my program for Springbank, 1975.
I posted on tnfnorth board asking for results.
I think my first year was '81 and then the 4.5 in 1984.
By the way Steve, I just meant to say that you were saying as well as I was that Salazar ran the 3 mile high school race.
I'm not even sure of the year he got the record. In 1975 Salazar might have only been in grade 11 so he may have ran the next year as well.
Did you see the pic of Shorter and Drayton?

OK, looked it up in my 1975 Springbank program. In the H.S Boys entries for the 3 mile (Murray McNie Trophy): "#703, Al Salazar, Wayland High Ass." (no jokes, has to be short for association!) Assume it is Wayland, MA, and Salazar did actually run the race. Like some Springbank races, it's true distance was always suspect. Was it an ACTUAL 3 miles? Maybe a Springbank expert can step forward with a clarification on the accuracy of this high school 3 mile. As mentioned before, the feature race, the "12 mile", was always known to be short of 12 miles. Didn't matter really, as they were quite forthright about it, and we always factored the discrepancy in when we ran it. I ran 56:35, and always figured it to be about a 59:00 12 Mile. Springbank, despite this measuring idiosyncracy, was always a FIRST CLASS event, drawing the likes of Shorter, Rodgers, Drayton, Fleming, Jon Anderson, Neil Cusack.....I felt very honored to have run it in 1975. I remember, already there was some buzz about this tough little kid from Wayland, MA who was going to be "pretty good". Perhaps someone with a 1976 Springbank program could look up the 1975 H.S. 3 mile results??

Mandingo, yes, I saw the pic. of Shorter and Drayton. I didn't see much of these two gentlemen in the race, however, as they ran away from everyone. Great race! I gained a lot of respect for Drayton that day, as he outkicked Frank....which did not happen very often. You're right, Salazar may also have run in 1976, where he probably would have run even faster than in 1975. Still the question of accuracy of distance, though, if considering his PRs.
