So the meet is this weekend - obviously CU will likely take it out but in previous years Western have given CU a real challenge.
Does anyone know who the Top 7 for Western will be and how strong they are? Any stand-outs? I hear they have 2 New Zealanders on the team - kiwis have done well at CU in the past with Aish/Buck etc..

CU runners definatly know that there is more important races than the shoot-out, but to say they wouldnt care about losing to a DII team while they themselves are ranked #2 in the country is absurd. The coach cares, and you can bet the AD cares if CU loses to a colorado DII school.
That is why they seperate the scoring between DI and DII.
As to the OP, expect a possible upset. With CU being down from last year, and Western being up from last year, it will be a very close race.
Expect to see a Scottsman up front for Western followed by a mix of 4 native coloradoans, and two Kiwis.
They do not care. That is why the separate the scoring. When it matters for one more than the other at this time of year then the coach does the smart thing by making the score insignificant. Otherwise the team would get too wrapped up in it and try to back off. This way, it does not matter. If he actually cared he would back off the team and kick their butts.

First of all isnt it obvious that they dont care about this meet, wetmore peaks his guys for nats not the shoot out. To them its just another workout and if they win then they win if not who cares because its september. Also why does everyone think CU is down this year? I mean they did lose some top guys but I can bet that they have some guys stepping up. Honestly you should never doubt them because they will always just surprise you. Seriously wetmore obviously knows what he's doing and they will be as strong as they ever have.

I don't know who cares about what, but the seperate scoring is so that it meets the ncaa division 1 sponsorship requirment. Not more than 30% of the field can be non D1 and the meet still count. That can be avoided by just having seperate scores.

If I am correct - and I think I am - Adams State technically beat CU at the shootout last year. But, becuase of the separate scoring, each team was it's division's champ.

Why isn't Adams running this year? Actually they didn't technically beat CU. They beat CU, but technically, they lost to CU.
No "technically" about it, in the combined results Adams beat CU 37 to 44. CU's consolation is that they put 8 runners in front of Western's 5th runner. Oh yeah, and their team's performances in November on much greater stages.

They're running at a different meet, instead.
I think the CU guys look at this as a race opportunity, just not a "sharp" one. They will run their best and compete hard, just not put an emphasis on team score. It serves more to get them in race mode before Pre-Nats, I would imagine. And yes, Adams State beat em up last year. I think CU will trade the Rocky Mountain Shoot-out championship for an NCAA Championship any day of the week.
I don't know how good Western is, but CU is going to be strong. If the weather is not too hot, I would expect they run much better this year than last. Vaughn was borderline heat stricken last year and Harkrader didn't run. Look for Medina and Tebo to run all-out, trying to earn a varsity spot, and for Pifer, Vaughn, Neuman, Janson, and Harkrader (if he runs hard) to be ahead of where they were last year. CU will miss an injured DeMoor and an underachieving Pannone, though...
SI offers some good competition, assuming all the entered teams run A teams. ASC will have a good battle with a full strength Stanford,Cal Poly, Chico, UCSB, CAL, etc.

Weather should be 50s-60s and partly cloudy.
Also, course could be damp, but not muddy, from overnight showers.
