Well, inevitably ALL races end and the pain ends with them. It just takes longer to recover from a 5k or a 10k.
Middle distance isn't necessarily more or less painful than long distance, it is just a different type of pain. True you may have to deal with the "pain" a little longer in a 5k, but it is not to say that the pain in the last 300 of an 800 isn't just as difficult to deal with.
From experience, I would say that the last 600 of a steeplechase is the most difficult pain to push through.
