Nike can market like no one else but there needs to be some shame occasionally.
So I'm watching their football commercial that I really like. But I actually decided to really watch it this time. And to my horror it features drug cheat Shawn Merriman.
So three cheers for Nike for not even waiting a year until after his drug suspension to promote Merriman.

It's commendable you care so much about DRUG CHEATS!!!!
Most of america doesn't. They briefly bad mouth it in passing, but once that guy is on their team, they could not care less.
You should have realized this by now. The sports that are the hardest on DRUG CHEATS!!!! have become the most unpopular among the general population. Cycling is in big trouble and may take years to recover. Football and Baseball have minimal penalties for DRUG CHEATS!!!!, sweep the penalties under the rug in the shortest time possible and have stayed the most profitable and popular with team payrolls of 50-150 million dollars.
Personally, I am sick of hearing about it and usually just skip the articles or stories about it. -
I thought the same thing when I saw it. They even make Merriman look super-human.
I've seen it a couple of times and if you watch carefully, it's really not that well done. The shadows and footwork look weird and some of the players in the background don't seem to be involved in the same play.
Anyway, the NFL couldn't care less about drugs, didn't Merriman make the pro-bowl last year? -
its like one of their most recent track catalogues, with gatlin on the cover...wtf?
-
Hey guys it's just a little cheating/performance enhancing is it really that big of a deal. Know what would be really sweet? If nike could fix rockets on my shoes, and I could cruise to a 1:15 mile. Someday we won't even need to be human...wait that's called drag racing.
-
Every time I'd see the blurb of Ladanian Tomlinson's press conference where he think's the Patriot's motto is cheating, I think what do you feel about your teammates (Merriman) cheating?
-
For whatever reason, his drug use was glossed over very smoothly last year. I bet most football fans hardly remember it. I mean, the cheater was the defensive MVP of the league last year, despite missing how many ever games for his suspension and when using PEDs. Good grief.

Is everyone here forgetting that we are talking about the NFL which is just a step above the WWE? Noone cares if everyone in the NFL is on drugs, its pure entertainment. It's not exactly a hallowed game. Its a bunch of oversized monsters running around on the field. I mean does anyone care if the Undertaker or Stone Cold is on steroids? No because it makes it more fun to watch. It's like Nascar. The faster and bigger the crashes, the sweeter it is to watch.
Yea it's wrong but it's so damn fun to watch.
Baseball is different in that it is held sacred by alot of people.
I personally love the NFL but you cannot compare it to track or other sports. Its pure entertainment. It's a freak show and we love it.
GO PATS -
I don't look at Merriman as a cheater. In my mind, the whole league is using something (some sort of PED or supplement or weight training regime) to deal with and prevent injuries, etc.
Emmitt Smith used steroids to treat injuries and he's in the Hall of Fame. Ditto for many others in this great sport. -
I was actually thinking about this, because I was at a Nike Outlet store, and they had a giant poster of Justin Gatlin up.

this commercial made me want to play professional football

Well, see, it actually makes sense for Nike or anyone else serious about producing a high-quality product to feature a drug cheat.
The thought process is - this athlete is willing to destroy his body and shame the sport by using performance-enhancing drugs. So considering the lengths he is going to, would he wear just any shoe? Heck, no! He'll wear the best gosh darn shoe out there, because why ruin your performance with a bad shoe when you've already compromised your integrity for a few bucks? Those who care enough to cheat care enough to wear Nike!
See? Makes sense now, doesn't it? -
I'm sure Reebok, Adidas, etc. are taking strong stances against their sponsored athletes in the NFL, MLB, etc.
-
The fog has cleared, thank you.
-
Weldon, you have a lot of balls to start a thread like this under your own name on your website.
Good job.... -
And Wejo I suppose you don't support Nike in anyway, shape, or form? Don't you wear the Nike Frees?
-
Wejo, I'm pretty sure someone just spiked his toothpaste with an anabolic steroid or something. Either that, or he was rubbing a mysterious cream on himself and didn't know the key ingredient of said cream.
-
You know, that actually makes so much sense it's scary.
-
it was flaxseed oil and arthritis cream, gosh!
-
Sounds like wejo's crusade against drug cheats is to make himself feel like a winner. After all, wejo failed completely as a runner after hyping up his coach and training regimen as something special. Why not take it out on the drug cheats?
