Can someone settle an argument for me. I think that you can't run under 14 mins for 5k unless you can run under 3.50 for 1500m. I know there may be someone with good endurance who has did it but what do people think ??

I agree. Several people I know who train all lactate threshold, no track workouts run 14:40-14:55 track 5Ks and 3:55 1500s. Hypothetically, if they did some faster VO2 or sprint workouts to improve their 5K, they'd improve at least 5 seconds in the 1500.

I think Mario Macias ran maybe 3:49/3:50, but this was when he was at COS, so a few years before he ran 13:30's and 28:02, so I imagine he could probably run sub 3:50. I think I saw a result that him clockedat 4:06 for an indoor mile, so that would probably be a sub 3:50 1500m effort too, especially if it was ran indoors.
I've just run 3:50 and 14 in the same season within weeks of each other (and also a 759 3k). I would like to think that I could have run 5-10secs quicker over 5k so I think your friend is wrong (assuming that I couldn't have gone any quicker over 1500 obviously)
Mesrat Defar: 14:16 and probably could do around 3:57 or so. There is no way in hell she'll ever break 3:50, yet it wouldn't surprise me if she ran 14:07 or so. But women have more relative endurance
If you are the person I think you are then you have ran 3.44 for 1500m so 7.59 and sub 14 are within your reach. You did 14min dead at sports city in a gale as well. Defer is class but i don't think she will not break 14mins. Also your 7.59 suggests you are in much better shape than 3.50. (especially with a great turn of pace in the final 50m and a 60s last lap!)

there are three guys on my team who would be very hard pressed to run under 350 I believe and have all run between 1400 and 1405. They are all 10k runners. Who never do any type of 1500 workouts (or 5k workouts for tha matter)
