Refresh my memory. When exactly did Charlie Weis procaim himself a genius?
Between his 4th & 5th dozen Krispe Creams.
True. They did Willingham wrong. And he's a better coach and recruiter that Charlie Weiss. If NBC has anything to do with it they'll miraclously make a BSC Bowl.Remeber they are the Notre Dame Broadcasting Corporation Ha HA !!

I have said for years I couldn't understand why Willingham took a demotion to coach at Notre Dame.
great call. I think anyone who knows football would agree with you that coaching football at Stanford is a more prestigious job than Notre Dame.....???? And is it really a demotion of you get paid more?
I am 42 and can remember when they were relevant. They haven't been for many years.
ND has gone to 2 straight BCS games, and been top 10 in each of the last two seasons. Not relevent???
Charlie Weiss may be a self-proclaimed football genius, but he needs to work on his recruiting skills if he wants to survive another year.
This is simply one of the most uniformed posts I've seen. Self-proclaimed genius? Nice try. And he needs to work on recruiting to survive another year??? ND currently has the #1 recruiting class for next year. Even if it ends up #2,3,4 etc, it's still pretty good for a guy who needs to learn to recruit. And pretty good for a program that hasn't been relevent for many yrs. And Weis isn't in any danger at all of losing his job. He's a great coach who has done great things already for the program and has them headed in the right direction. Let's not forget that just a few yrs ago, during the Willingham era, many football people thought ND might be done for good, and may never be competitive again. Weis came in and took em to 2 straight BCS games. Now he has the nations top recruiting class.
They will make no bowl nor do they deserve one. It's really sad if you're a fan. I was really hoping to see the Irish have a solid year this year, maybe end up in the top 10 or 15.
ND is 117-119 out of 119 1-A teams in a bunch of statistical categories right now. They are horrible.

Notre Dame's biggest problem is that they went back to recruiting students, not football players, so they have set the bar very high relative to teams like USC, Ohio State, and LSU. That, and the fact that they play a solid and diverse schedule every year. In any given year, a schedule that includes USC, Michigan, UCLA, Penn State, Georgia Tech, and Air Force would be rated up against the best in the nation.
Maybe a genuine Notre Dame fan can correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Bob Davie establish the precedent that Notre Dame would no longer accept mediocre academic records into their program? It still astounds me that Gary Barnett took Northwestern to the Rose Bowl. Now that has to be the greatest comeback story ever, so perhaps there is hope for Notre Dame yet.
You don't know much do you? ND's last two recruiting classes were ranked eighth nationally. Last year's class included three five star players, including the number one player in Claussen. They would have been a lot rated higher if the Little's didn't go elsewhere.Their class for next year is in the top three if they can keep all of their commitments on signing day. They are indeed awful this year. However, it's unreasonable to think that a bunch of freshmen are going to come in and be incredible and gel. They are also running a new defense this year. They will be very good in two years, and much better next year.

If it wasn't for the central Ohio pretty boy, Notre Dame would have only won 5 games last year. Charlie Weiss may be a self-proclaimed football genius, but he needs to work on his recruiting skills if he wants to survive another year. Gerry Faust can't even believe Notre Dame can be this bad. If they are lucky, they will have a 1-7 record going into the Navy game.
Yeah, I guess I don't know shit. Where exactly did I ever say that they didn't have a solid recruting class? Notre Dame's brand name and academic reputation alone are going to attract good players. But they have a much tougher task relative to other big name teams, because they don't tolerate thugs, charity cases, and prop 48 students.
sagarin- he wasn't replying to you.
Like I said, I guess I don't know shit :)
Of course they will. The only people who would ask this question, are the ones who have no idea how the world works.
The precedent was set during the Holtz era and was one of many factors contributing to Holtz's resignation.
Tony Rice and Chris Zorich would not be admitted today. The regrettable aspect is that not only did both succeed on the football field, but both graduated, and probably give back to the school as much as any other football graduate in the past 25 years.
Even a school held to higher academic standards should recognize the importance of football to its' institution. My solution would be to allow Weis a certain amount of at-risk admits every year and hold him accountable for their academic/social success. That can expand the talent base immensely and land some people who will feel some loyalty.
I am a Notre Dame graduate and there is no way in the world this team makes a BCS Bowl. But I'm glad Weis has a long-term contract and we can judge him over a recruiting horizon.
My brother had the same dorm room, in Dillon Hall, Rice had when he lived on campus. He stopped by and said hi one day. Nice fellow.
