They have that a lot around my neighbourhood. Women in scantly clad dressing waiting to be picked up.

Road Whore: Person who runs many prize-money races, selling out and burning up their talent and ability all in the name of money. Running at that point becomes a business. The days of running for the hell of it and enjoying it to the fullest are gone. Examples of road-whores: Kenyans,Khannouchi,Paula Radcliffe,Runyan.

In other words, if the olympics still required amatuer status, Kenyans would not be in the olympics, neither would certain adopted-Americans.

Would disagree with your assessment that KK and Radcliffe are road whores. KK probably doesn't run more than 6-8 races a year on pavement. If you're the world record holder, and your track racing days are over, it's kind of a cheap shot to say KK is a road whore. Radcliffe seems to be able to balance (thus far) the roads with her passion for the track and cross-country. And hell, if you had her talent and could run a few marathons and be set for life, you wouldn't do it?

Guys like Tim Broe would more than fit the criteria, however. Given a choice between running some stellar times in Europe every summer and get the international experience he needs, Broe always chooses to peak for his annual East Peoria 5M Pancake Run, or tries to cash in big in Central Park. Then months of rehab for his injuries. Road whores can't see the forest through the trees, and Broe is as good an example as any.

Do the runners that race on the track do it for the hell of it or the enjoyment of running?They do it for living.Bashing runner for using thier ability to make the a better life for themselfs is like bashing a regular peson for taking high paying job instead of low paying job that would be more helpful to others.

An envious reference to runners who are out there pounding the pavement almost weekly thru the season, TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING.

You know just like doctor-whores, teacher-whores, etc

Eddy Hellybuck (sp?) is THE ultimate road whore. He is also the ultimate masters runner and a really cool guy, just has a little problem with whoring on the roads. I take offense to being referred as a doctor-whore, I am not a subspecialist.

A distance runner who is not talented enough to compete in world class competition abroad yet good enough to mop up on local superstars and a few of his/her road whore ilk. This definiton may also inlcude the talented runner capable of running world class events, yet for reasons attirbuted to laziness or greed continues to whore around on the roads. See also the big fish in a little pond.

Hey brother, I appreciate that little lesson. Don't let anyone tell you old dogs can't learn new tricks. I just learned what that was. Here for all these years I thought they were those skanks we picked up at truck stops over the years. Thanks again for setting me straight.

I would put Jon Sinclair as the ultimate road whore. Not that it is a bad thing. He made quite a living as a professional runner for a long time. To each their own...

Anyone ever see that commercial Sinclair did for "Z-Bec". I don't remember what Z-Bec was (some sort of multi-vitamin or performance supplement). They played it endlessly on the local station here when I was in high-school. Even now, I still can't get that cheesy commercial out of my head now whenever i think of Sinclair.

You are a road whore if you run road races on Saturday and Sunday of the same weekend with the goal of winning prize money in both.

People enjoy talking about the days of yore on this board, and I'd like to point out that Shorter/Rogers/Pre/Virgin were able to make a living [albeit a monastic one at best] from running and still compete against the world's best in the "purer" Olympic arena (and World Cross like a mofo in Virgin's case). I would submit that these guys would certainly take advantage of road money if they were running now. Wouldn't you, if only you could?

It is ludicrous to cast aspersions on current athletes wherever they may be from, questioning their motives etc because they are able to derive some meager economic gain from doing their sport!?! Running pays less than the camshaft of one NASCAR engine and you are going to begrudge these guys a few crumbs?

i have career earnings of 175$ i guess that makes me the equivalent of a 5$ hooker.

What about Ryan Shay? He drops out of his only World Competition. This is the only race that did not involve a payday. He fits every part of your definition.

Actually no! Unless you're very ugly and fat and don't get picked up. $5 whores can do quite well if they get a good turnover.

Exactly..good point, although fastest in the race wins, what do these B rate kenyans give back to the race or community of the event. Nothing. There A-hole agents even have the audacity to call the race director and demand a comp entry and hotel or travel for a race which pays maybe a few hundred for the win. Those of you out there who are aware of these "agents/manager wannabees" know exactly who I am referring to.
