I think it hit me as to why we have some many debates on here as to who is "American" and who is not, regardless of the factuality of the situation: if an athlete has represented the previous nation in competition, thus the athlete is not considered "American."
So, for example:
Frank Shorter is American, as he did not run for Germany.
Alberto Salazar is American, as he did not run for Cuba.
Meb Keflezighi is American, as he did not run for Eritrea.
Abdi Abdirahman is American, as he did not run for Somalia.
Leonel Manzano is American, as he did not run for Mexico.
Lopez Lomong is American, as he did not run for Kenya.
On the other hand,
Bernard Lagat is not American, as he competed for Kenya.
Sydney Maree is not American, as he competed for South Africa.
Mbarak Hussein is not American, as he competed for Kenya.
Simon Sawe is not American, as he competed for Kenya.
So, obviously, those are just my thoughts on how I clarify in my mind who is "American" or not. Heck, if they are all Citizens of the USA, they are all Americans in my mind, but in terms of competing for US Records, titles, etc., they are not, in my eyes.
