you are "in about 33min 10k shape"....does that mean your pr is a lot faster or slower than 33min? What is your 5k pr? how do you know the marathon is going to be your event later? Having a goal of cracking 30min in the 10k is good, but it looks to be a long term goal for you (if your pr is around 33 flat). Daniels is a pretty good program, but to only follow it over breaks and then train under a different program (your DIII coach) at other points of the year is probably not going to be the best idea.
General rule of thumb:
guys who crack 30min for 10k:
run at least 70mpw at times (some over 100mpw, some 60mpw)
have 5k prs of at least 14:40 or better
usually run/or ran DI in college
How many 26:xx Kenyans and Ethiopians ran DI in college?
Running sub 30:00 sometime in life when you are a 33:00 guy at 18 years of age is a totally realistic goal. What will it take? Lots of patience. Plenty of basework. Progressive improvement in your V02 max workouts. Staying injury free.
I ran under 33:00 at 19. I never improved because I lacked patience, did not do enough basework, overtrained, and generally sucked it up. I watched a good number of people at my talent level go sub 30 by age 23 by being patient and having a long term focus.
One of my friends went sub 30 without even going to college, self-coached. Going D1 might get you there or it might burn you up. It all depends on your personality. Stay focused on the goal, remain confident in your training, and be patient.
