When someone says they ran 500 miles over the summer in high school, is this counting all miles run after school ends, or after track season ends?(assuming track ends sometime in May)

I think it only means the miles run at recess.
We always used to say Memorial Day through Labor Day. That's about 14 weeks and about 35 miles per week.
In HS, you definitely go by end of school to when you go back. I remember that being 10 weeks.
June 1 - Aug 31

Ask them.
We get out of school at the end of June and fall practice starts in mid-August. From July 1-practice is 6 or 7 weeks. Track ends the first or second week of June, but most kids take some time off during Regents Week- in NY State.
I always liked having 10 weeks, so you can have nice round figures as goals form 300-1000 miles.
