If you are 20lbs overweight, how much does this slow you down? Obviously this varies by person, but I thought that I heared somewhere that it was like 10 seconds per mile per 5k roughly per 10lbs?

That sounds about right. John Kellogg told me about 18 years ago that it was one second per mile for each additional pound. He didn't specify the race distance, but I guess it wouldn't matter.
Put it this way: Was Sebastion Cabot as good as Sebastion Coe?
I've always heard 2 sec/mi/lb. That's more generous than what you are suggesting but seems in line with what I have seen. Of course it's a rule of thumb.
If you are getting in shape and dropping the lbs, you can probably gain 2 sec/mile/lb.
If you are already in shape and just getting fat, you will probably only lose 1 sec/mile/lb.
Wow, if I lose 113 lbs and trim down to 57 lbs, I might get an OTQ.
