From Denver Post:
"The whole year was geared to get me to the world championships so I could get some experience at the international level and get ready for a very important year next year, which is the Olympic stage," said Torres, 22. "That's the ultimate goal for any runner, to make it to the Olympic level, to compete and hopefully to try to medal"
This is the problem with US running. Its not good enough that he been selected to the Championships, now its that hes there for the experience and whatever happens happens.
Im not sure if this is really what hes thinking or just a convenient way of saying, "I know Im not going to medal so heres my story for why I wont medal".
Either way, its already a loser attitude and too many US runners are playing that game. If you are selected you are there to kill yourself trying to medal, not run around with your mouth open getting the experience. And this froma guy whos been to the World XC Champs already.
Seriously, does he really think he has a better shot of winnning in the Olympics?
How much more experience does he need before he stands at the line saying, "Im ready to take anyone on now"?
I dont see that kind of defeatist attitude with the Africans. Theres a sense of fearlessness, that allows even the freshest least experienced young Kenyan to want to take on Geb or Bekele, any chance they get.
