Ed Whitlock ran sub 4 couple of years ago, he was 69 at the time.
haha funny. I would think it would have been someone around 30 or so.
I think 30 is to old for your first time unless your a 5k that never ran the mile.
Didn't Clarke eventually break 4:00? How old was he when he did it?
I don't think that Clarke ever broke four minutes. I don't have the list with me, but I'd try Gordon Pirie, who must have been well on the old side of 30 when he finally got under four.
You're right that Pririe must be one of the oldest - he was 29 when he ran his one and only sub-4 mile in Dublin 1960.
I like the sound of that!!

So there has not been anyone older?
Billy Dee was also 29 when he ran 3:59.17 on 14/7/91 (dob 18/12/61).
Ray Roseman was 30 - 3:59.8 on 23 Jul 1969 (dob 19.05.39)

However, there must be a few a lot older. Perhaps a long distance runner who only ran the mile once or twice.
What about George Young?...for some reason I remeber hearing that the first time he broke 4 in the mile he was 32 years old

Good call. Born July 24, 1937. Broke 4 on March 4, 1972. That looks like 34 years old.
Is this Danny P, perchance?
Bannister and Landy must be in their late 70s by now.
How old was the first woman to break 4:00?
If someone has time, look up Steve Austin from Australia.
here's the american list of when each runner first went sub 4.
