52.5 back-to-back.... that is pretty effing quick

I'd say if you had SUPERB endurance the minimum would be 48.
agreed, maybe 49 if you come from a miler's endurance background.
i'd say 48.23 if you pull down your pants and take a big dump on the track
I'd agree with the 48.00 time guess. I'd guess most 1:45 guys can go in the 46.xx range.
Probably a 12.xx 100 guy myslf wrote:

Rich Kenah ran 1:43+ and I don't think he ever ran faster than 47+.
Did he ever seriously race a 400?
Yeah, 48 point with good endurance.
i believe you already answered it. minimum speed needed is 52.5
hey you related to Mr.Spock?

Probably the best use of logic on thsi thread.
Anyone remember Johnny Gray and Mark Everett? Those two could throw down at the 4 and the 8.
Alan
Ryun had milers endurance(obviously) he went 1:44 and he had 46 second speed. i would say 47.5 minimum.
also Liquori had 49 second speed but was not near 145 from what i remember, so i doubt u could do a 1 :45 only having 48 second speed
The best conversions I have on my list from 400 to 800 are Andre Bucher at 2.18 and Giuseppe D'Urso at 2.14.
D'Urso ran 48.9 and 1:44.46, and I believe Bucher did some 10K training. So it can be done, but you probably need to run a ton of miles by 800 standards. But if you think 52.5 for 400 is effing quick, what are you going to think about sub-49, which is what is required?
Juantoreno went 44.26(32m vrs 2300m for Evans WR 43.86)
1:43.50WR Olympic gold double must be mentioned
I believe he went 50.9/52.6 in the WR run.
Swede Rickard Pell, formerly of Manhattan College, has run 1.46.36 and his 400m PB is 49.3. He could att his best do a second better in a relay with a flying start.
Yurij Borzakovskij had splits of 51.2 and 51.3 when he ran his PB of 1.42.5 back in 2001. He has sub 46 400m speed out of the blocks and that certainly helps cus then you can pass the first 400 in 51ish and be very relaxed. But then you need endurance too

FIFTY-TWO POINT FIVE
You could probably be a bit slower than 52.5 in the open 4, as you'll have a running start for the second lap. So I say 52.7.
according to frank horwill's article on the 800 meters rick wohlhuter had a best 400 of 48.2 and ran 143.5 which equals his best quarter x 2 plus 3.5 seconds per lap. coe had a best 800 of 141.73 and his best quarter was 46.96 so coe could run about 2 x his best quarter plus 4 seconds, quantorena on the other hand had a best quarter of 44.26 and his 800 was 143.44 so quantorena could run his best quarter x 2 plus about 7 seconds, horwill went on to say if you have a 800 runner with quantorena's speed and wohlhuter's or coe's endurance the record for the 800 would be 136 -138
