there are only 19 athletes on the start list and everyone knows that there are going to be drops after the 10k. there is no reason that the start list should be limited to such a small amount of people anyways, a few pretty fast runners got screwed this year. the 10k has 25 guys in it.

Maybe all the 13:35 guys should run faster; I think it's great news for the future of US distance that this time isn't good enough.
Haven't they taken 22-25 athletes over the last 5 or so years in this event. Why take LESS athletes on a fast year. Wouldn't it make more sense to still take the 22-25 athletes?
They have 25 athletes in the 10000, 26 in the 1500, 36 in the 800.
On the women's side they took 14 in the women's 5000, but that event isn't as deep this year. The rest of the distance events are 22 or more.
Too bad. So much for giving a few extra (young) guys a chance to run fast and see a national caliber race. Way to go USATF. Way to help develop the talent.

Why does USATF drop the field size this year in comparison to past years when this year is faster?
Why does USATF wait untill a day when people are probably traveling to the competition or the day before they travel to let them know if they are competing or not?
this appears to be pretty unfair. usatf needs to rethink this or should have. they screwed over some runners.
Pre was right - F--K the USATF! They do what they want with no regard to the athletes. No wonder the smaller seemingly meaningless meets are growing. Who wants to put up with their BS. Notice how many entries there were in the Nike National Meet in the boys 2 mile and 5k vs the JR USATF 5k or 10k? Keep doing it everyone - support your local meets, college meets, American Miler Series meets, etc, etc. USATF might get the hint someday - then again who cares if they do!
You guys need to read the instructions before complaining. The field size in the 5k was always supposed to be low this year. It actually was supposed to be 18.
The thing that makes me IRATE is when they don't follow their instructions and screw deserving athletes. Particularly when it is someone I used to coach and still advise. In the men's steeple, the field size was supposed to be 26. They had 24 athletes with the B standard of 8:45.0. They all got in.
Then they apparently were athlete friendly and did the right thing to let Carl Moe in even though he only ran 8:48 this year as the field wasn't full yet because Moe ran an 8:41 at NCAAs but it didn't count as he was DQ'd. My athlete Emory Mort had run 8:45.8 and is within the .1% which is supposed to get you in the field if their still is room. Somehow he didn't get in.
It makes zero sense. You say you are going to take 26. You take an extra guy to make it 13 in one heat (who doesn't have the time technically and isn't within .1%), but not in the 2nd heat to make it an even 13 in both heats as you anticipated all along. Ludicrous.
If you are going to let one guy in, let them both in and meet your quota.
But if you look at the start lists, the have 13 in both heats but the 13th name is blank in heat 1. I'm hoping that means they meant to let him in but somehow messed up. We'll find out Wed. morning hopefully.
To think he was nervous about getting in but I told him to forget about it, he obviously would get in as the rules were pretty clear. Oh well.
I noticed that it said 18 athletes, but why the low number? The 10000 was also limited to 18, but wait, they took 25 on the guys side and 22 on the girls side for those races. What is the reason that they have a limit of 18 for the 5 and 10, but 24 for the 1500. Why not 24 for the 5 and 10 (it isn't like you need to run another heat). Why did they not follow their rule for the 10, but decided to go with 19 in the 5. It doesn't make sense. Does anyone know why the low numbers for the 5????

I'm sure the original reason is because you have rounds for the 1500 but not the 5 and 10. But then, yeah, why make the wierd arbitrary exceptions? Maybe they figure the 10 will spread out more and not be a traffic jam, but adding guys ends up making for more lapped runners, and no one wants to see a big finish dodging lapped runners.
Does anyone know if they take on additional athletes in the 5k if 10k guys who are declared in both, scratch after the 10k?
Rojo, I understand that the in the entry standards it states that they will take 18 athletes, it has said that for the past couple years and and they have always had more. It says the same thing for the 10000 but they have significantly more, some of which that will be dropping the 5000. There is no reason that they should have 18 athletes running the 5k, not to mention the possibilty of like 15 or so. Anyone that has paid attention to distance races in the past could tell you that 5000's can handle 25 or more people with out anyone having any real issues. They aren't paying for the slower athletes to compete and they are in general the younger ones that are hoping to develop into the next stars of the sport.
I don't think its a big deal that there is one extra person in one steeple trial when there weren't enough people hitting the B standard, if you are going to have standards then you can't make exceptions. Never-the-less Carl Moe did get extremely lucky to get in to this meet given that his qualifier came in a race that he got dq.
I have had my travel arrangements forever and now I'm going to have to sit and watch the race from the stands. I guess I shouldn't complain too much though, I am young and should have many more chances. I guess my 13:40 isn't as fast as I thought.
I've emailed the USATF to see if this is a possibility, it doesn't look like it is. I am still waiting to hear back from other sources but I think my (and morgan's and haas' and gebrey's etc.) chances are pretty slim.
USATF did not break any of their own instructions. This field sizes are approximate and by looking at the entry lists as a whole you will notice that very few of the events are at the posted field size.
The issue is fairness, I'm pretty sure that there were no athletes that didn't make a b standard that made it into the competition because they were close to a b standard. There are a couple events where the field size is significantly bigger than the posted size with a lot of provisional athletes making the cut and there are events where this didn't happen but the reasons seem completely arbitrary. Mort didn't make it because he didn't hit a standard but Morgan didn't make it because USATF decided 19 is the limit for reasons that are unknown.
.1% of 8:45 is .525 sec which would mean that 8:45.8 is not within the standard that they set.

Well it is not as bad as having people equivalent mile and 1500 times and only allowing the 1500 runners in.
USATF does not seem to care about developing the sport, effectively marketing it and supporting upcoming athletes.
Letting people know whether they got in or not less than two days before the meet does not help the athletes.
Limiting field sizes (eg - men's and women's 5k) doesn't help promote development of athletes and the sport.
Way to go USATF - as usual, nothing will change.
