he ran 3:42.00 and won by about 2.5 seconds which is alot of time for a prelim at that pace.

He may just be that much better than everyone else. A burst of speed to gain a margin of comfort in terms of qualifying may have just really outpaced the field. He beat a tough and fit Solinsky indoors - he is the real deal.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
even still you would think that he would coast it in and not both keeping that big of a lead...I do remember him winning his 800 semi last year and celebrating after he won
but then he'd be sacrificing the gift. we can't have that.

its like in the book "The Greatest" about Gebrselassie saying that in the 10k Prelims in the Olympics he kicked the final 200m as a message to his competitors of how fit he was. That not only will he win his heat, but show them a preview of whats to come in the finals.
That's because the better runners were in the other heat.

max smith?
If you listen to Lamong in his flocasts interview, at about 1:23 in, he coughs. This shows he used too much energy and his body is still struggling with the oxygen debt he went in. He is going to have a hard time in the finals.
If you saw the race then you would definitely say he didn't go into any large amount of oxygen debt. Maybe he is sick? Think about it rocket scientist!
Sorry, it was a lame attempt at humor...
I really think he is gonna get the win here.
No problem. I actually think Manzano or Rono is the favorite. They are the last two champions and I would say that Lomong has to take it away from them before putting him as the favorite. Manzano is just to good at kicking at the right time!

Geb did it, but on the other side hundreds have chosen to coast instead. I also doubt that Geb would've lost Gold by coasting the semi. With 300M to go in the finals and everyone scrambling, Manzano, King and others aren't going remember Lomong sending a message in the prelims. But Lomong just might be a little tighter in that same race because of it. Lomong's good, but not where 3:42's easy. Maybe he recovers, but it's not worth the chance to send a "message".

I thought that there were just 10k FINALS in the olympics?
poster was mistaken; referring to 5000m prelim.

Nah, Tokyo 1964 changed all that...tho there was still just a final in 1968. Heats began in 1972 Munich.
i thought geb was referring to his 5K prelims in the book; haven't read it in a few years, though; maybe he was talking about any prelim he was in. he could certainly afford to do it in whatever race he was in.
max smith is as good as lmong, just not stupid enough to kick so hard in a semi.

Har har. I guess we'll see on Saturday. Does 2 seconds really affect you 2 days later? No. Does showing everyone that you are ready to butt heads affect the other guys' thinking two days later? Yes. I think that Lomong has just decided that no one crosses the line in front of him, ever. He's got them all thinking about him, which was the point.

Well he didn't kick at the right time last year. The truth is that Manzano doesn't have the best top end speed, hes just good at kicking off a fast pace(i.e. his frsshmen year) Lomong is faster in the sprint and he is by far the strongest. It is his race to lose. He hasn't won the 15, cuz he's never competed. He is an NCAA champion thoght. and he was top 5 in the 8 and cross, hes a monster. Very few of these guys are capable of placing that high in the 8, just imagine them trying to match him at 10k.
