I got an email saying the La marathon was 74 to 120 yards short this year for the masses not the elites. A runner was telling me this and I told her I had no problem posting this on here.

They didn't run the same course?
The LA fire department became concerned about a tight turn near the middle of the course and altered the course after the elites (women and men) had passed but before the remaining runners approached, shortening the course by 120 yards, leaving it short of a true marathon by ~74 yards after the short course prevention factor is taken into account.
does that take anyone out of the trials?
so anyone who was shooting for a qualifier for trials was f-ed over as a result? how is that fair?
Not an issue for trials qualifiers (men or women), as there were no US runners that made even the B standard. (It was a wicked-hot day, particularly for those who had been training in wintry climates.)
Nevertheless, there is perhaps a moral issue at hand. Remember this was the infamous Devine Racing that put on this event -- and then chose to cover up the course change. Some Boston qualifying times might be at issue, as well as individuals' PRs.
Did we ever find out if the prize money was paid?
what would that translate to time-wise for a typical marathoner?
I wouldn't worry about it, if someone ran a PR that day, in that weather, they certainly deserved it.

But anyone adjusting their time from this race needs to add the time required to cover 120 yards. If they had run the original route you wouldn't subtract 46 yards from everyone's time.
Again the money has yet to be paid, but is that really is a surprise? On the bright side as of June 5th, a clause kicked in that sparked a 4% interest on the prize money owed. On the downside, 4% on top of $0 is still zero. I am still broke.
