I ran the San Diego RnR marathon yesterday. I'm getting a bit more confident, and a bit faster, so I ended up running in the general vicinity of the elite women for the first time. I noticed that many of the women who were in positions to win prize money (several of whom actually went on to finish well) were very erratic. I can understand why the leaders might want to throw in some surges, but many of them varied their pace a lot when they weren't even in the lead!
Additionally (and I've noticed regular runners having the following problem as well), some of them had trouble running the tangents. Here's a hint: On flat ground, a straight line is the shortest distance between two points. Just because the road is *about* to turn to the right in 50 meters doesn't mean you need to tear off to the ride side of the road IMMEDIATELY after the previous left hand turn so that they can get the inside lane on the next turn. Especially when I'm the only person nearby, I clearly don't give a crap, I'm trying to run a steady pace, and I'm not competing with them for prize money. I don't think that running extra distance will help their time, but I might be wrong.
All in all, I think this behavior cost some of the women actual prize money. Does anyone have an explanation for this, or has anyone else noticed this kind of thing happening themselves?
