Extremely High Heart Rate - Seeking Advice

1. First piece of advice is don't seek medical advice over the internet; see your doctor.

2. Secondly, while there is variation among individual heart rates, 240 after jogging is pretty extreme unless you're a shrew or a hummingbird; better see a doctor. Your family doctor or any physician's assistant at the urgent-care may decide to refer you to a cardiologist. If you jog a lap around the parking lot and they confirm that you have a pulse of 240, they may suspect you're in atrial fibrillation and send you to the hospital to confirm.

3. Third, you have no idea whether what I'm saying is true or not, so better refer to Number 1 and see a doctor.

I get about 240 after medium runs outside. After easy runs outside it's about 200-220. However, if I'm inside running on a treadmill, my heart rate is about 170-180 at the end of easy runs.

you need help, dude. it's 90 in georgia and humid as hell and on an easy run in the sun my HR doesnt get over 160. get yourself checked out.

try this: if you are experiencing 240/min, hold your breath and do a headstand. If it drops back to a more normal post run rate right away you might have SVT (a form of tachycardia)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supraventricular_tachycardia

GO SEE A DOCTOR. GO NOW. DON'T MESS AROUND. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT AND GO.

See a doctor. Maybe try taking it for a full 60 seconds too. Also are you using your thumb on your jugular? Thumb has its own pulse which means you are double counting.

If you can't see a doctor, or don't want to, then why don't you take yourself to a fitness equipment place and ask to test out a treadmill that has an HR monitor -- say the handgrip kind, so you don't have to mess with a chest strap. Do your running and see what the machine says.

If it's not even close to what your 6-second base counting gives you, then you're probably OK.

If it's as high as you think, get over to the doctor ASAP.

There are plenty of doctors out there who will be in tune with young runners, you might want to find one. Surely you have had some form of physical in recent years. If you feel asymptomatic, I wouldn't be too alarmed. The error in counting for 6 seconds and counting 24 beats is probably pretty bad. Borrow a heart rate monitor if nothing else. You can probably get a cheap one. Surely you can find somebody who will loan you theirs if nothing else. My max at a ripe old age of 45 will get to 198. I have a high max and a low of 34-38 when in shape. I probably had a very high HRM when I was young. If you get a heart rate monitor, you will drive others nuts when they pick your signal up instead of their own! Obviously if you choose a HR monitor to train with, don't use the standard equation but work with heart rate reserve.
