If you had 28K to spend on a new car then what would you get?

The Saab 9-3 is an incredible value, I personally think it handles better than the BMW or Mercedes cars at the price range, it's the safest thing on four wheels short of a tank, and they are pretty good looking nowadays too.
A mustang GT. But that's just my thing. It's not for everyone.
A $100 pair of Nikes, a $200 b******, and a $27,700 savings account.
I would lease out a Porsche Carrera S.

Scion xB 5 speed and pocket the 10k+ in change.
Motorcycle. A Ducati, possibly.
toyota or honda are the tops in reliability according to consumers reports which accepts no advertisments and tests cars purchased anonymously from regular dealerships. saab and mercedes aren't up to par.
Suggested test drives in that range:
Acura TSX
Audi A3 2.0T
Ford Fusion AWD or top of line FWD
Mazda Mazdaspeed6
Saturn Aura XR
Subaru Legacy GT
Subaru Impreza WRX
VW Jetta GLI
If you want to save some money:
Honda Civic Si
Mazda 3s
There is nothing wrong with Accord or Camry either, but the Camry is basically a transportation appliance and the Accord is nearing redesign. All good cars, just depends on what you want...

I'd take the cash and do two chicks at the same time.
I'll not give the normal response about buying something used and investing the rest since others have said that and since it's not an answer to your question.
28k earmarked for a new car, I would consider the following in no particular order (If really considering any of these, I would do serious research to see how well they hold up -- my picks here are on looks only, and I would NEVER buy a car based only on that):
1) Mini Cooper (convertible or not). Easy on the gas, cool to look at, great for in town driving. Not sure I'd want to drive it across the country, but for tooling around town, yep.
2) Ford Mustang convertible. Hey, not necessarily a practical car, but paying $28,000 for a thing that depreciates rapidly isn't practical to begin with. Everyone I've ever known with a convertible loves it.
3) PT Cruiser convertible. Cool little cars.
4) Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder convertible.
5) Saturn Sky convertible.
6) Saturn Aura. North American Car Of The Year.

I was in the same boat two years ago, and bought a (then) new '05 TSX. 25K miles later I couldn't be happier with it. Its held its value remarkably well (blue book value still 26+), I've had no problems whatsoever, decent gas mileage, sporty look...I could go on. I test drove almost every car in this price range, and the TSX was a no brainer. I'd recommend you at least go to the dealer and drive one. Good luck with your purchase.
Saturns? Ha ha.

I couldn't agree more. I couldn't be happier with my TSX.
its gonna be hard to find a mustang gt for $28k unless u want auto which is stupid since it is a muscle car.
I would buy a mazdaspeed 6 for sure.
You might want to go to saturn.com, check out the Aura, Sky, Outlook, Vue, and Astra (the latter two are under "future vehicles"), then check back in. GM is merging the Saturn and Opel brands, and the cars look fantastic. Hopefully, with a few more years of design-centrism, the brands will be free of any relics of GM bean counters (e.g. 4 speed autos, pushrods). The mid-$20k range gets you a handsome Saturn Aura with a 3.6L 250HP V6, 6 speed paddle shifters, 2-tone leather seats, and 18" rolling stock. I've heard all the anti-GM arguments before, and understand the appeal of Toyota and Honda, but the Aura is a fine car on its merits.

I know this is a matter of personal preference, but who on Earth would buy a PT Cruiser if he had $28K and his choice of any car? Wait, you're telling me I can buy a car that is a Dodge Neon but with uglier sheet metal and worse mileage? And I have to spend almost $10 more for it? Sign me up!
a used BMW 3 series. Worked very well for me.
You should look into test driving the Volvo S40.
