The D-I 10000m and 5000m Double?

Mcdougal will win the 10k so everyone can stfu about him having no ncaa titles, its gonna be hard to find a 10k with a field like the one he ran. McDougal will run the 5k cause galen run would shit on him in the 10k

Rupp Double 5 & 10 : i think he did it last year and this year he's feeling even better and running a lot better)

McDougal 5 : he has a top time leading into it(so far) and i'm betting he's wanting to save another 10000 for usatf

Rono 1500 : he won it last year, looking good this year, kind of under the radar

Rohatinsky 10 : doesn't have the speed to finish in a slowly paced 5000, so why risk it? he can go bang heads with rupp in the 10

McDougal will run both. It would be a major upset if he lost the 5k, so I see him winning the 5k and probably winning the 10k too. He needs to win at least one title, or he will be known as the biggest choke ever, but this is Josh's year, so I say he wins both. Go Josh!

Rupp could jog along in both and outkick McDougal. Count on it.

mcdougal ran 3:57 outdoors 1-2 months ago, and that was without any mile-specific training. i wouldn't go as far as to say rupp could outkick mcdougal. he might be able to lose him in a hard pace from the gun, but not outkick. the only reason rupp was able to beat solinsky at the end of the 5k at oregon was because solinsky tightened up. i am surpised that solinsky hasn't been as race sharp recently, but maybe theyre saving him for usatf's.

So what is the thinking behind Rohat not saving himself for USATF's if the reasoning is that you only have "so many 10000m's in you" per season. By that thought process, will Rupp still run the 10000m? The schedule is 5000m prelim, 10000m final, then 5000m final. So McDougal wouldn't be fresh if he doubled, and is not as invincible as when he's fresh. The smart money says pick one, unless you are in it for a team title. The USATF meet is also a factor for the top dogs who will try to make the team. I think that for all but 1 guy doubling equals no title. Some of these guys have a decision to make. It will be interesting to see who gambles.

Interesting take. So McDougal goes for a head to head against Rohat in his (as of now) second best event, and Rohat will not be as fresh during the battle. That could be a good race. A prelim 5000m shouldn't take anything out of Rohat's legs, but it could...

What is the schedule. Is the 10k first? If so I dont' see why Rupp wouldn't double. Same with Rohat. Same for anyone who sees the 10k as there better event. Does McDougal think the 5k or 10k is his better event?

Barnabas (Ole Miss) has already said he is planning on the steeple only at NCAA's. He wants an NCAA title bad.

I am pretty sure it goes 5000m prelim, then the next day 10000m final, then next day 5000m final. So to be truly fresh, you have to pick one. In the past, it was a rotating schedule, so you were able to get away with being totally fresh in one event, while doing the double in some years. Since they have been trying to sell the meet to TV, this has been the permanent "distance double" schedule.

There is no way Rupp will double at NCAAs. Salazar will not allow him to run three races, two of which would be quite hard, 2 weeks prior to trying to make the US team for worlds. That would be just silly, especially since if Rupp runs at USATF like he did at Cardinal he will make the team. Also, Rupp has already run 3 10ks this year. Plus USATF, possibly worlds, and I'm sure he'll gun for a fast time in Europe already gives him 6. That's already pushing the limit for the number a person can successfully handle. 7 would be too many.

Rupps 10k's this past season have been a 10k in Australia-1, Stanford #1-2, Stanford #2-3, Pac-10's-4, NCAA's would make 5, USATF would make 6, and assuming he didn't chase a "really fast" time in Europe, Worlds would make 7. That makes me think he will indeed skip the NCAA championships and focus on the 5000m and a showdown with McDougal and a peaked Solinsky. What say you?

You're going to call me a homer and rightfully so. Tim Nelson is freshest of the 10000 qualifiers. I don't know about the 5000, but he won the Big 10 in a pedestrian championship race.
