Hi looking to run well at a good D3 or school that basically has a solid mid-distance/distance coach. I also want a good school academically. I know Pomona has a sub 4 min miler in Will Leer, but is he just good or was he developed by a good coach. Any help and guidance. Thanks

Hard to overlook NYU--strong results from multiple middle-distance and distance runners in recent years.
Brandeis is a "has been". Nothing much to speak of since the days of "stormin Norman".

You may not get the attention you want. And most important for the money you pay at this private school your diploma is worth crap. I had friends that went there and anytime they apply for a job outside the Chicago area, recruiters say they have never heard of this college (I guess this may be the case for many D3 schools).
where did will run sub 4?
Stay away from this program. They have history but have been down for several years (down for them). Coach is good but he has to deal with about 60+ guys in xc and even more in track. You may not get the attention you want. And most important for the money you pay at this private school your diploma is worth crap. yea and "down for them" is usually still better than most other schools. and if he is looking for good middle distance.. id say winning Drake relays in the 4x8 indicates some good middle distance runners.. and even if the team does have a lot of guys, they all get their individual attention from top to bottom.. i knew of a guy they had a couple years ago that was the slowest on the team and usually one of the slowest at most meets and he was treatest just as good as the top runners

North Central is a great college if you're looking to work at a running shoe store for the rest of your life.

Yeah, Will ran 3:41 yesterday at the Oxy Invite. It was pretty amazing. He still had a great kick despite going out sub-2 for the first time ever. He's currently the 6th fastest 15-guy in the NATION. Maybe the next Nick Symmonds? Who knows...
Pomona has had some great recent success with Will Leer and Crosby Freeman. They have another guy who is a solid steeple chaser (9:13) and they have some good young guys in the 8 and 15.
If you want a good school academically and for running you could check out Occidental College. I'm obviously biased but we are building a solid program right now. We won conference in cross (beating Pomona) and we have two of the best D-III runners in the nation with Kevin Chaves (30:23, 14:37, 24:15 8k cross; injured middle of this season but will be back next year) and Alex Ramon (9:01 3k SC, 24:30 8k) and a strong mid-pack (including a 9:20 3k SC). We are looking to win conference, regionals, and have a solid performance at Nats. And we are getting a new coach for next year who is looking to build a great program. Look for us next year.

An up and coming program is Ohio Northern University. They are in the OAC. When it comes to middle distance they have Jimmy O'brien. He was the indoor national campion in the 800m. He was a state champ in highschool in 1:52 mid and ran a 4:24 mile. Now as a soph he has run 1:49 in the 800 at Gina Relays and 3:53 in the 1500m at All-Ohio all alone. That is a considerable improvement. Their 4x8 relay team this past weekend at the OAC meet went 7:37. That was with a Fr 400m runner lead off (1:57 high), Sr. Bierkan (1:53 low), SO. Porter (1:55 mid), and SO. O'brien closing in (1:50 high). Bierkan was a 4:36 miler, 1:56 (800m) runner in hs and now has run 3:59 and 1:53. Porter in only his second year at Northern has gone from 2:00 800m and 4:31 miler in hs to a 1:55 and 4:00 1500m. The reason for the great improvement in the recent two years at Ohio Northern is due to the Assistant coach Jason Maus. He has taken the program to a new level.
