If we could set it up, who would pull off the victory in a 5,000 meters on the track: Pre, Bob Kennedy, Goucher, Rupp, or Ritz? Not just purely based on times, but on time, guts, tactics, and competitiveness.

Pre, more gutsy than those faster than him,, faster than the rest of them. Closer to world records in his time than the rest.
kennedy. I mean, seriously.
Kennedy in his 1996 form would win every time.
Here's how it would turn out:
1. Rupp (he's on fire)
2. Goucher (only a bit behind Rupp right now)
3. Ritz (I heard that anti-gravity treadmill thing works wonders)
4. Kennedy (getting up there in years, probably quite out of shape)
5. Pre (I think he died a few years back)
Well Pre and Kennedy are great in there generations, that's why i picked them, but do you seriously think none of the current crop above could hang and out-kick to pull off the upset?
This is a crap field, I don't think any of them could make the Olympic final today.
I think BK would pretty much dominate. Pre would take it out fast, Kennedy would hang until Pre couldn't push any harder. goucher would go out with something to prove and get dropped with Pre when Kennedy decided to win it. Rupp would try to run a little tactical, would end up outclassed by Ritz, who would come on strong late after making sure he wasn't broken. Pre would fade a little.
BK- 13:06
Goucher- 13:13
Pre- 13:17
Ritz- 13:18
Rupp- 13:22
This is how it would happen, in modern conditions, on a modern track, with modern shoes and all that.
It is between:
1996 Bob
Pre in top form
healthy ritz
27:33 shape Rupp
13:10 shape Goucher
results:
1. Kennedy 13:10
2. Pre 13:19
3. Goucher 13:19
4. Ritz 13:21
5. Rupp 13:22
Kennedy lets Pre rabbit him, takes it to him in the last mile, Goucher would have been there the whole time and I give Pre the edge because they have pretty close mile PRs, so the kick would be a good one. Ritz would hold on but neveer really be in it, and Rupp would prove that he is a 10k runner, not a 5k runner. It would not go under 13:10 unless there was a rabbit, but assuming this was a championship style race, it would stay around 13:10. Now, if Teg was in this race, he would get 2nd right behind BK.
i think you all are short-changing Pre. With 1996 12:58 type Kennedy to push the pace, Pre wouldn't be left out flapping in the wind like in the '72 final. But I wouldn't be surprised if Rupp wouldn't try to prove he was the greatest U of O middle distance runner of all time and box him in to Kennedy's rear, casuing Pre to half-step around him once the final kicks began. Goucher is tough, and may prove he could go out with the 2 all-time greats. I wouldn't put it past him.
Pre
Kennedy
Rupp
