have never finished 4th in an OLY running event! Hence, not better than Pre. Of course they have run faster, due to many advances in training theory, technology (tracks, shoes), nutrition, etc, but that doesn't make them better.

How many Cross National titles does he got? Track? How many times has he led the US at Nationals? How many American Records does Rupp have? When was the last time Rupp was beat by an American at any distance? Are you seriously comparing the two? The only thing they have in common is they both were or are ducks who run distance events.

Of course, times are much better now across the board, as are tracks, spikes, training, nutrition, (and drugs). But for a modern runner to accomplish what Pre did would require setting American records at every distance from 2k-10k simultaneously and being a genuine contender at the international level, preferably by the age of 21. Just comparing times is a fool's game. By those standards, my 100 time is better than every 1920s olympian, and I'm not even fast.

Ron Clarke , Bill Rodgers were one of the greatest 10,000 and marathoner ever, and they never ran well in the olympics.Druggies Cierpiski,Viren and Mills has won gold medals, and that's pretty much all they did. Olympic Games is VERY BIG TO WIN, but the reality, it is just another race, what about the other major ones?

umm, meb has finished better than 4th in an OLY running event.KK is also better. I'll give you the others, although Hall has potential to be better but isn't there yet and Salazar and BK are certainly debatable. Abdi shouldn't be in the same sentence as Pre or the rest of those guys. Very, very good, but not in the top-10 all time distance runners from the us in my opinion.

I can't understand why these and other comparisons are constantly debated. Neither position can be proven, since they are two people who can never meet for a head-to-head settlement race.

I can't believe that all of you famed letsrun posters didn't automatically bash this idiot. "Never finished 4th in an OLY running event" except for the fact that Meb got the silver in athens for the marathon.

If pre wouldn't admit that 4th in the olympics was an accompishmetn then none of us should say that it is a standard to be measured by...

Kennedy's 6th place in 1996 was close, one could argue he had to race against much faster competition as well.

Pre could take more pain then anyone but Lasse Viren wasn't in that much pain.
