What kind of 400 speed is typically needed to run sub-2:00 in the 800?

I agree
I agree as well. When my 400m pr was 56 I ran 2:02 for the 800m.
I'd say you need to be able to run a quarter in 59.9999999 seconds.
Depends on the type of runner you are. If you lean more towards the speed side 52-53. If you are a strength runner, 54 should do it.
A 56 low netted 2:00.99 in my case. So I'll second a minimum of 55 if you're a strength runner
probably low 55
55-53 should do it. Although I'm sturggling to do so at a 53 400, but my base mileage was non-exsistant, so i'm lacking endurance right now.
53 had me flirting with it but I never got under.
I did 1:58.8 the same summer as 54.8
First time i broke it was junior year of HS. At the time i was running 52.# and ran 1:58.1
56 and 1.58 for me, very much strength based also ran 3.57 1500m at that time.

That's me, too. I ran a 53.x relay split and 2:00.8 for 880y.
Well I ran 54.9 last season, a couple of hours after running an 800m, but still only ran 2:04 for the 800m . I'm not even much of a speed-based athlete. I think that 53 is probably closer to what most people need. Even then, I've got a mate who still didn't go sub-2 despite running 53s, so I guess it depends.
you're gonna get all sorts of answers for this one.
a couple years ago when i was doing 110 a week, i couldnt go much faster than 57-58, but could go under 2. Also know a 49 point guy who cant come close to running under that mark.
Bottom line is that if you have 55 speed and some endurance background, you should at least be able to give it a go.
53 is safe, but 57 is a minumum if you're a pure strength runner. Never seen anyone break 2 who couldn't run a 57 but I've run a 1:54 off 54-55 leg speed. I'm more of an LD guy, though (5k, 10k, 3kSC)
junior in hs -- my 400 pb outdoor is 55.09 and my 800 is 1:59.76, so i think 55-56 is a pretty goot max for most people.

1:54 with a 54/55 leg speed? no f***ing way. that's unbelievable

Not really. I maxed out at 1.57 and have never broken 56.
