It occurs to me that in all marathons I've watched, I can't ever recall seeing the real elites take a gel pack (Gu, Carb-Boom, whatever). Maybe they just do it off camera but as nearly as I can tell, all they do is drink - water, gatorade, etc. In triathlons, certainly but in marathons, I just can't ever remember seeing it.
Can anyone here recall seeing some elite runners take gels in marathons? Did any of the leading guys in London or Boston do it this year?
I only ask because I know of many very fast (but not quite "elite") runners who take several during marathons. I have never been able to take gels during races because they always give me stomach cramps but I'm wondering whether I should work on it once again this summer.
(For sake of discussion, let's define "elite" as 2:22 or better for men, 2:45 or better for women. Some may consider those times much too slow or too fast but I'm not looking to argue that point)
