Hey Im looking at goals for the 2008-2009 season and Im thinking of trying to hit a boston qualifier Nov 2008 at Philadelphia. I will be 20 years old. Is that too young to try to race a marathon? If I go for it Im going for it meaning sub 3.

don't be a baby
well is it?
not running in college? if not, might as well go for it.
start upping your mileage now and there's no reason you can't do it (pending decent pr's, of course).
yeah right now 17:305k and 59 15k off of 35mpw
If I do it im upping the mileage to in a gradual increase beginning now untll June 2008

Nice comeback.
Go for it, kid. I ran 2:54 at age 20 in my first marathon and that was with the last 10K taking me 45 minutes (and very little 'talent'). Lots of my buddies ran lots faster at the same age. Get in good consistent miles and find a good rounded training plan to take you the last 18-24 weeks.
Alejandro Cruz ran 2:08:57 at Chicago when he was 20 years old. He was hailed as the next great talent. But sadly, he never came to close to running that fast again, even though he had a long career as a marathoner.
If you're serious about running marathons over the years, wait until you're 23.

Am I the only one who thinks he run sub-3 tomorrow?
IF you run for your college track and X-C team; the best time to run one is between X-C and track season. If you are not in college or on the team, then you can run a couple, per year, that you can point for and train toward. You will run a better marathon as you rack up the miles the next 5-8 years or so and do better in your mid to late 20s, if you stick with it that long. At your young age, do NOT forsake the shoreter distances and 'track training' as well; as these all build you to help you run a good marathon at a faster pace.
No 20 years old is not too young as long as you got the training under you, you'll be fine.

Yes it is. Develop your speed and your 5k-10k distance for 3 years and then think about running a marathon.
Unless your only goal for running is just to run one marathon sub 3 and then be done with it.
He could do it in 6 weeks easy. But he has some time up his sleeve, so may as well use it
Dont get caried away with huge mileage. Being hard will make up for it, and wont burn you out. 50miles maximum i think
I cracked 3 hrs on the training your doing now (plus a couple of 2 1/2 hour runs) and had only taken up running a year previously
Good see you you thiking so far ahead. Planning will get you along way
see I want to see how fast I could get in the shorter distances but something about going to Boston to watch a friend made me think Wow I want to do this for real, I think its too hard to do the speedwork necessary to stay competitive from 1500-5k by yourself or without a real coach . I think in the process of training for a marathon I could substantialy lower my 5, 10, 8, and 15k prs just due to the increase in mileage. Right Now I am a college frosh who runs for the club team . Im thinking of going with a steady mileage increase from now to fall 2008 to get from 35-65 mpw. Maybe a few 70's.
I have a lot to prove in terms of running and im very hungry. I got hurt in HS due to poor nutritional habits and I missed a lot of trainign and racing my junior year. Ive got a fire inside....knowing kids i beat are now on scholarship. So i dont think it would diminish that.
it seems a better idea to do it when im 23 but right now i have a good atmosphere to get in the miles. And if im in grad school or a job im not sure of the flexibility
As you said, you might as well go for it now when you have the time. I ran two in college both before turning 21. If I had to balance running XC/track, I probably wouldn't have tried it--but I wasn't good enough to run DI competitively, so I took on the marathon as my outlet.
Not too young. But I'd want to see that half marathon in the low 1:20s before you think about going sub-3. You've got an ugly drop in performance between 5K and 15K. Put in the miles before thinking too much about a marathon.
If you don't think you'll be running competitively in three years, why not run three marathons this year?
