Went out in 57 one time (200m split was 25 seconds) - 800m, 2:12, 1200m 3:42, finish 5:09
Oh yea. Dont remember much but im sure im not the only Radio who did this.

I never did but there was a guy at the state meet my sophomore year that did (2003). He went out around 57-8 and ended up running around 4:25.
I did in MS...
I ran 58-59 in the first lap and I was in secound at that point...
I finnished in 5:06.
I lost to the kid who ran faster than me for the first lap.
Anyone who has seen many 1600's (even quite a few 1500's in college) knows that it's pretty common to see people run the opening 400 at a suicidal pace...and then they slow way down, because they have to (You can goa ahead and blame Dr. Noakes' central governor if you want).
The better strategy in my mind is to go through the first lap DEAD LAST (or barely in contact), then hold your pace on lap 2 when those idiots in front of you have to slow down.
You can often do something similiar to the kickers in the second half. Many people will slow down in lap 3 to save somethiing for the kick--people who accelerate at this point can often blow the race open (and drive many kickers crazy).
In my league meet junior year of high school, I got outkicked. So the next week, I went out out 61, then went 70, 70, and 61. The weird part was my effort was the exact same throughout the entire race- the only difference was in those middle two laps, this magical wind was blowing at 35 mph and no matter where you were on the track, you were running into the wind.
I also got outkicked and finished second again by the same kid.
that should be "next week at the state meet"
So, do you have a PR of about 4:04 then? I can only assume you do if you only slowed down because of a horrible wind.
i remember in a 3200 race at state a kid went out in like 59 seconds for the first 3200, was so far ahead of everyone, but died... he still hung on for fifth place though is the funny thing. his coach musta been a moron.
When I lived in Florida, I used to watch the HS state meets. Moise Joseph would go out at about 60 in the lead. Then he would run 70 for the second and third laps. Then he would close in about 60.
It was an interesting strategy. His competitors would be freaked by the fast opening lap. But then 800 would be about right. By 1200 they would be too slow and Joseph could outkick them at that pace.
I was seeded second in our district, with a time of 4:27. First seed was at 4:16, so I knew I was probably going to be racing for 2nd and to just let the number one guy go.
First lap, I pace myself a bit slower than the first guy. It felt fast, but I was hoping to PR anyway. I was a good 2 seconds back and went through in 61. I'm thinking, no way that's right, my 800 PR was only 2:00.
Coming around the 2nd lap, I'm way behind first place, so I think I've slowed enough to recover and hold on to 2nd place. My split - 2:07. First guy goes through in about 2:01.
I hang on to run 4:30 or so and get 2nd. First place guy runs 4:13

Well what would you expect! 29.5 sec mile pace is pretty grueling.
we used to all the time back in the early 70s....of course we all slowed way down and ended up running in the 420's and 430s, but, for some reason, we thought it was the thing to do, go out that 1st 1/4 between 57 and 62. crazy.

In the 1996 Indiana State Meet 3200m the field went through 400 in :63 (8:24 pace). I went through in :66 way off the back of the pack. Was shooting for 70 second pace, first lap in :68-69 at the fastest. So was a little fast. Winner was in the 9:20s, I passed a lot of people and even led for maybe 200-300m during the 6th lap and finished in 9:32. Watching the 1600m they went out in at least :60 with the winner running around 4:15.

I was at the KBell Invite at Los Gatos maybe 6 or 7 yrs ago, and this guy went through the first lap of the mile in 62. Second lap in 72, third lap in 82. I think he still finished under 4:40.
in highschool i knew nothing about pacing and would always go out like a bat out of hell. my p.r. for 3200 was 10:06 but i never went out slower than around 66 for the first 400 and my 800 splits were usually in the 2:23 range. im guessing i had a sub 9:50 in me if i wasn't a moron... probably would have helped to have coaches tell me to slow the f down too.
