I just had a podiatrist tell me that it's impossible to land on your forefoot. The heel always lands first, he says. I couldn't quite believe what I was hearing.
The subject came up because he wants to put my moderately flat feet in custom orthotics, supposedly designed for running, which have a lift in the heel. I questioned the purpose of raising the heel, and I told him that I typically land forefoot/midfoot. No, he said, it's not possible to do that.
Anyway, I was feeling pretty good about the advice I was getting from this guy until he came out with that one, which is demonstrably false. I would guess that most people heel strike, but I taught myself NOT to do that after having IT band and hip problems a while ago. Those problems disappeared after I changed my running form. I know a lot of these specialists don't have experience with runners (at age 49, I think I was the youngest person in the waiting room), but if your life's work is the human foot, shouldn't you have a nodding familiarity with running mechanics and different running styles? Has anyone else had this kind of experience? I'm going give him another chance and ask him to clarify what he meant when I go in for my next appointment.
