I get the folowing message when I try to open an attachment sent with a email to me. "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folders Options control panel." I am running Windows XP. Anybody have any idea how I do that? Thanks
Sounds like you do not have the software loaded on your computer to open the program (e.g. if they sent you an Excel file and you don't have Excel, it can't open).
What I have found to work sometimes is this: save the attachment to your computer, then run Windows Explorer to find the file where you saved it, then click on it to open. I've had some luck using this method when I could not otherwise get the attachment to open when clicked on from email.
You could also save it to your computer and try to open it with various programs you do have i.e. wordpad/notepad/textedit (to do this right click, or control + left click on the icon, choose "open with", browse to whatever program you think might work. Sometimes this works. Probably you'll just get a bunch of gibberish. The best thing you can do is download whatever program created the file and run it with that. Too find out what program you need to open the attachemnt look at what ends the file name and try to find out based on that. For instance if it ends in .pdf you need adobe acrobat reader or a similar program, if it ends in .zip you need a program that opens archive/zip files. Too find some of these programs you can check out a site called oldversion.com.
Try right clicking it and then click open link in new window.
The problem was it was in Excel format. I downloaded a free trial of Excel and I was able to open the attachment. Thanks for the help.
