PLEASE HELP WITH RUNNING VIDEO PROJECT

First of all, you need to have a good script of what you want to talk about. Yes, if you just film yourself running around, that would be boring; but if you want to talk about your training, then you can show your weekly training pattern; yourself doing a long run, track workout, even some races, etc. Then it would be easy to fill 5-minutes. Find out what you want to show; write down a script; then move on to filming. CO would be a great place to film. I wouldn't necessarily recommend Denver (just another big city) but Colorado Springs would be cool. While there, try to talk to some running legend too. I believe Garry Bjorklund lives there??? Isn't Jon Sinclair and Kim Jones live there too (or am I thinking about other city in CO...)? If you can do that, then add some old footage of them running. You'll be lucky if you can fit them all in 5-minutes.

You could show the dedication and committment needed to become a top class runner- blood sweat and tears! Early morning runs, demanding coaches and the loneliness of the long distance runner- What it takes to be a winner in terms of time energy and to the exclusion of everything else!

The video at the YouTube link above is very good, but it is not so accomplished that you can't do something similar. Note how it has a nice blend of local and home-shot video clips and professional ones taken from media sources. But more important than that is that the maker has thought very well about the lengths of each passage and the type of cuts he employs from image to image. Also, the screen shots are synched to the music very nicely.

Gaining access to so much video may be hard for you. But you can grab plenty of images off of Google Image. Get very comfortable with Windows Movie Maker or Apple Quick Time. You can do a lot of nice things with them. Good luck.

A hint: It's not 'Teenage Wasteland'

I am the one who made the video that was linked above and I am by no means a professional or anything of the sort. What i'm saying is that anyone could do what I did. I took all the footage myself and used iMovie to blend the music and shots together.

Just pick a portion of a song you think fits what you want the video to feel like and shoot your friends running in some sweet places, then talk and give the information that the project is asking for, then finish it off with some humor or some more cool shots. Use a tripod or something stationary to film the shots you want still.

JohnPfeil: On a second look, I see you are right--no footage of pro or top-tier college runners like I originally remembered. The quality of the amateur footage is high, though--lighting is good and more or less uniform, and the camera is always steady. Most of all, d each shot is nicely framed and thought out, with a lot of pleasing backdrops and perspectives. Very sweet!
