For better or for worse, I have scheduled two marathons, 3 weeks apart this spring. I've never taken less than many months between marathons before. I'm looking to hear from some people who have done something this what they did for the few weeks in between, and how it worked out.
The first marathon is Boston on April 16. My goal time is 2:37-ish (about 6:00 / mile pace).
The second marathon is a small, basically downhill marathon in Pennsylvania on May 6.
My weekly mileage has been as follows
Jan: 102, 77, 100, 84
Feb: 83, 93, 42 (cutback for 20 mile race), 92
Mar: 81, 70
For this week I'll do 60 and my 4 weeks before Boston should be something like 95, 90, 60, 30
I've done a number of MP runs. My 20 mile race was at 5:55 pace (albeit on a flat terrain). I've also done 4, 5, and 8 miles at MP and intend on doing 12 and then 8 in subsequent weeks.
If Boston is yet another hot day I have already promised myself I will drop the hell out and not suffer through my fourth consecutive Boston Death March. Likewise, if I complete Boston and the second marathon is hurting me, I'm fully prepared to turn that into a training run as well.
But let's assume Boston is a cool day and I run the whole thing and I'd like to try for a fast time on the downhill course. What would you all suggest I do to make that most possible. Mileage? MP runs?
