randall king, the unknown all american?

I just saw this old info about Randy King and the useless reply by "Deuce Bigelow". I have seen others question Coach Kings' personal track performances. I am sure Villanova can confirm his achievements there, but those considering him as a coach for their children may want to gain some insight to his character as a young man.

I remember Randy dropping down to 200m (from 400m) to race Jamie Morris (later a running back for the University of Michigan and for the Washington Redskins) at the Massachusetts High School State championships in 1982 or 83. We all knew who Morris was, but it was the first time that most of us had seen King.

Coming out of the turn, Morris had a minimal lead of 10 meters (I believe it was closer to 15m) and everyone assumed it was over, everyone except Randy King. Across the track it was difficult to tell who had won, but Morris did manage to hang on and out-lean the fast closing 400m man.

King was absolutely legit as a high school sprinter and I greatly respected him for dropping down to race Morris- a Mass state champ at both 100m and 200m. It was the most exciting race of the meet and those of us watching had Randy King to thank for it.

I went High School with Randy and he claims to be an All American in Football. He wasn't even a GBL All Star and didn't even play his senior year. He was very good at track. However as far as football he couldn't catch a cold if he was naked in the Arctic Circle!

I don't know if Randall King is a good coach or not. I've seen people posting things about his coaching abilities and that part I can't confirm. But, what I can tell you about his achievements as a 400 meter runner I have not been able to validate and I believe they are 100% a pile of made up results.

I actually did coach with Randy at one time helping out some youngsters. He told me he ran 44.7 at Villanova and ran professionally as well. Being that I knew of Villanova's reputation in track, I figured if he ran the 400 there, he was probably pretty good and 44.7 is a World Class time. However, what he did not realize is my ties to Villanova. I know one of the track coaches who coached during his time there. I reached out to that coach and asked him what he knew of Randy King. And he said, "I've never heard of the guy and as far as I know, he doesn't exist." So, if a coach there during the time Randy supposedly ran at Villanova has never heard of the guy, then it's pretty obvious his claims of running there AND being a sub-45 second 400 meter runner are totally made up. I just want to clear the air on that because I have never been able to find ANYONE who can validate his claims NOR is he listed anywhere in Villanova track archives of having put up times anywhere close to what he claims.

Again, he may be a great coach and I personally severed my ties with him when I found out his lies, but in terms of what he's achieved, I haven't found anyone on this planet who has been able to validate that. And that would make me VERY suspicious working with anyone like that.

A check of Track and Field News annual rankings for those years would give you the answer.

Haven't found anything written by him that doesn't include his plethora of p.r.s. Just curious how legit?

He talks bigger than he coaches, and none of his so-called pro runners are doing anything. so, I guess his coaching is subpar to say the least... I spoke to him one time, and he talk as if he is the greatest coach in world with no Olympic medals. go figure humble pie!
