Which is a better indicator of ability in the shot put? Backwards overhead toss or forward between the legs? How closely does either of the distances obtained correlate to distances in actual shot put competiton?

NONE!!! Has zero correlation

Of course this is false. There is a solid positive correlation between these distances and distance achieved in putting the shot. (That is, those who throw farther in these tests tend, on average, to put farther as well.)
However, the distance achieved in these tests does not *guarantee* a particular distance in putting--perhaps MW meant that. I'd suggest you raise this question at elitetrack.com--you're more likely to get knowledgeable answers.
