Dave Wottle!
Damn what a finish!! First time I saw that video.
That should be MANDATORY viewing for any young HS runners.
Wow.

It's easy to be a Monday morning quarterback. That race was 60% LUCK & 40% talent. BEFOREHAND, who would have predicted that race would have been won in 1:45.95? If Ahrzhanoz (sp) had waited & moved just before the 600 mark, would Wottle have won? Don't come on here touting Wottle as some kind of tactical genius; it just won't wash, buster. Wottle was already on the downside of a LONG track season; I don't think he could have gone out faster the 1st 200 even if he wanted to. Sometimes good things happen to LUCKY people.
So you are saying your 2:00 HS'er should run exactly 30 second splits....YES?
All 100m splits under 13:00 and 13:09 seconds - including the last 100m. What a lesson.
Good freaking Lord - calm down already. Maybe watching it provides a little INSPIRATION. I don't think the original poster said anything about Wottle being a "tactical genius"
I wouldn't mind if you died. Geeezus. How many Olympic medals do YOU HAVE???!!!?????
1972 was ALL ABOUT INSPIRATION from fellow athletes... freaking Shorter being inspired by Prefontaine, being inspired by Wottle. Talk about trickle-down.. it was bone-chilling.
USA 1972 Olympics
800m, GOLD
Marathon, GOLD
5000m, 4th
10,000m, AR
There is the insinuation here, and on other threads about Wottle, that he ran the perfect race (exact splits, etc.). Well, that is hindsight...after the fact. Personally, I think his double at 1972 OT, and definitely his 1973 NCAA mile @ steamy Baton Rouge, LA were actually better performances ATHLETICALLY. Also, he was a better X-C runner than most people give him credit for...but everyone on here only references freakin' Munich. Yes, it was an exciting race, but I don't think he scripted it that way.
Personally, I was disappointed he didn't hang around for 1976 & Montreal. Him and Wohlhuter going at it would have been great. All I am saying is there was so much more to Wottle than just frickin' Munich...that's all, but you people just can't get past Munich; like it's his legacy.
It IS his legacy. (good grief)

There's the pot calling the kettle black.

Wottle had the fastest time in the world in 1972. There was nothing lucky about that at all.

Many people. That's the way championship events go, especially considering the qualifying rounds. After Wottle's 1:44.3 the best times for the entire year for the rest of the field were:
1:45.3 Arzanov
1:45.4 Fromm
1:45.7 Kemper
1:45.87 Boit
1:46.0 Ouko
1:46.3 Kupczyk
1:46.45 Carter
Wottle was the overwhelming favorite, a full second better than the nearest threat, over 1.5 seconds faster than half of the field.

Yes. He was on Arzanov's heels with 350 to go. Arzanov was covered. In fact, with 350 to go, Wottle had the entire field covered.

The facts run contrary to your way on tilt opinion.

Yes, that would be the preferred way to run.
Apparently on lecture tours, Wottle would say that he wins whether you play the race forward or backward. Easily one of the most exciting races I've seen.

The world record-holder getting the gold medal in one of the most memorable races in history. If that doesn't qualify as his legacy, then nothing does.
Geez, lay off the bottle, buddy.

This is very similar to Snell's 1960 800 victory.
and similar to Ereng's 1988 victory - Ereng was last at 750m well off the pace.
Wottle had been having injury problems. Wasn't he even beginning to doubt that he would make the team? Trouble is they didn't go out fast enough to break him.
Perfectly timed finish, I must say.
That race still gives me chills.
Kelly Holmes 800m was also won from the back of the field
