Collegiate Record -- 13:20.4 by Nyambui
American CR -- 13:22.6 by Salazar
Both were set in the same race, 2/6/81 at Madison Square Garden (!!!).
NCAA Meet record is 13:28.93 by Cragg is 2003.
well that puts solinsky 10 seconds from the college and 8 from the american college record, so it would seem as though he has a shot
He probably will not have a shot because he is likely to double or to be available to double at both NCAAs and Big Tens and those are his last two NCAA indoor meets of his UW career. He is not going to shot his wad on one race when he has another coming and he is unlikely to have enough left from winning the 3000 to come back and race that well in the 5000 -- reversing events, he is unlikely to try and run 13:20 in the 5000 if he is going to come back and defend his 3000 title.
I suppose he might triple, but I doubt that they will run him in the DMR because the young pups are running so well (three frosh with 401/402 times so far, plus the other guys; I wonder if they will have Detmer try the 800 -- he has already run 2:30 for the 1000m as the last event of the indoor Hept.) Notice that the record was a race to the wire.
By the way, when I saw him this morning he said that the 13:30 surprised even him (a little since he was not yet peaking. I am guessing that he might run somewhere around 13:20+ at Stanford in the spring.
The DMR and 5k are back to back so I don't think he could (successfully) run all three.

Triple is nearly impossible -- 5K starts at 9:30, DMR at 9:35. Note that Wisco may have to decide, however, whether or not to use Solinsky on the DMR simply to qualify on Last Chance weekend (ND, I assume).
There's also no reason to spread Detmer (ranked 5th in the hept right now) so thinly when he'll have another day of the hept coming up. Wisco also has two guys at 1:52 and three milers below 4:03. No need to experiment with a guy who already will have his plate full with an important scoring opportunity for the Badgers.
Another factor with Detmer is that he stands a chance of setting both a College Record and a World Record, albeit in a minor record. In his last multi competition he ran 2:30.8x for the 1000m and snagged the American Record; the WR is something like 2:30.2 and the CR is ~2:30.6.
I think that the DMR is on the schedule for the Big Tens, and they will probably run a qualifying mark there. They should be able to run a 2:55/0:48/1:50/4:00, which is 9:33+ (the running start in the 800 and 400 help bring those times down a little) and Groce has run a 47.08 in a straight 400).

While I agree that they should be able to run this time, I'd be very surprised if it happened at Big 10s. Keep in mind that:
1) Wisco's first priority Sat-Sun is going to be the team championship
2) The DMR comes at the end of the first day of the meet, directly following the 3000 "A" section, and within an hour or two of the mile, 800, 600, and 400 trials.
3) The meet record is 9:40, meaning it's rare for teams to load up in a relay when their points could be more effectively used spread around.
I wouldn't be surprised by sub-9:40, but if it's not necessary to win, what's the point?
