Didn't sign early, lost my scholarship

i would look into any kind of loan option you can to avoid working and running

i actually want to stress this further... i would NEVER, if it was under my power AT ALL try going to school, running for a team, and working

there is like a 90% chance your school AND running will be adversely affected by working...oh yea..and no social life...which can be just as bad the other two...

I watched my daughter deconstruct with 20 units + in college, working near full time and training for a race. A Non-college race her eligibility had run out It was not fun to watch. She did fine at work and school but ran one of her worst races. But I figure she made the right choices. I wish I could have helped her more but parents get tapped out once in a while and it was for only one quarter, her last in college. If you have a choice try and not work while going to school.

20 hours would definitely make life a bitch for you...

and lets say you somehow find a job that pays $10/hour, which is do-able, but not that likely..

thats freakin' 200 bucks a week..and a semester is what...15 weeks? 12? something like that..

ok, so you earned between 2400 and 3000 bucks for the entire semester (this is pre-tax)

so what it boils down to is you make life suck considerably more than it otherwise would have, and detract from your school/social life/running for barely 2 grand.

if you take a loan for all this, we have 16k, which seems like alot now, but its exactly the amount of dept i graduated from college with.

i make small payments that and i dont even miss the money, but i definitely would have missed those 20 hours a week during college.

Depends on your major.

I work 19 hours a week, 5 course load, competitive team...worked 2 jobs last year. Its no problem.

if you plan on going into a science or engineering field try getting a research position with one of the faculty members in your department. you may have a hard time getting one as a freshman with no classroom experience, but professors are always looking for people to work in their labs, even if it is just being a lab rat. you will gain valuable experience you won't get in a classroom, pretty much get to come in whenever you want, and it is great for your resume. i've been doing it for 2+ years and it is a hell of a lot better than working in the dining hall or at some restaurant where hours often suck and conflict with running. just a thought.

Work as much as you can over the summer before you go, take out a smaller loan for general expenses, the first semester/year in college is going to be a whirlwind regardless of what happens...

will this coach consider giving you that aid after year 1, or is he going to hold it against you that you didn't sign early the rest of the way...

what are you majoring in?

I'm majoring in chemistry. The coach isn't mad, he just decided to give the money to guys who signed early, which is understandable I guess, but he didn't tell me that those other guys were going to sign early, otherwise I would have made a decision back in November.

I have taken a full schedule, ran, and worked every year of college and haven't had too much trouble doing it. But you have to find a job that is very flexible with you.

I suggest trying to get a work study job on campus (if they have them) because they will most likely work with your schedule well. If you can get a work study job in the athletics department, it is even better. Check that out.

Why would it have mattered whether the coach told you that he preferred to sign better decision-makers?

It all depends man...freshman year is a breeze. This is my second year of taking full course load, working 15 hours a week and running/cycling for my school.

IF you can get a work study job do that; in most cases those employers are much more wiling to work around your class schedule. Be ready to work hard and make some sacrifices.

Need to get it figured out now..I was a Bio major with chem minor in college...2-3 semesters I had 4 science classes = 28 hours a week just of class alone..

even if you have 2-3 you will be in class nearly 60-70% more than the average business major before you crack a book...

I walked off my college team during my freshman year before I made the switch but was playing another sport that had similar demands for training/time/travel later on and it can be done, but at a level of effort you shouldn't have to manage..

if he is offering the $ for years 2-4, take out a loan this year and get situated...you will come out of college with some, but very little debt..you can take out a student loan ($5-6k?) that will be more than what you would make if working

You folks have lived an easy life it you think that going to school full time and working 20 hours and training is a full plate. It will surely test your time management skills, but it can be done-I know because back in the day I did that and then some.

Try a couple years in the military first and then those full time student/half time worker days will seem like a vacation.

I work 17 hours a week, run for a D.1 college, and take a full course load. It's def. doable. True, when I'm not running, working, or at class I just lay around pretty much doing nothing cause I'm pretty tired but everything in life is a tradeoff. Do what you have to do.

Get a work study job. This would keep you on campus and you could make a little bit of money. Most work study jobs are pretty easy and flexible.

Well, I've heard this too often. Coaches offer scholarships and then the athlete want's to shop around and weigh their options. You should have done your homework as a junior so you knew what to do as a senior.

Get out of the sport now. You procrastinated too much and will do the same thing in college. You'll take up the college coaches time just to turn around after the first semester and quit the team because you have to work too hard. Save everyone the time and effort and throw in the towel now, get a job and study.

you folks who think people who don't work are taking it easy must have either gone to a bad school or been in an easy major (or both).

there is no way i could have done 20 hours of work during undergrad. I didn't have 20 hours for anything. hard training, tons of studying, homework, and class, and a minimal amount of time for a social life.

I don't claim that it was a hard life compared to what others go through, but i wasn't sitting around playing video games.
