The coach at my school had his guys on the track at least 3 times a week farting lactic acid.
They would stand with hands on knees after each interval.
Meets were usually 2x per week sometimes three, so you were always resting from a meet or tapering for another.
The longest runs on easy days were 20-30 minutes or "6" miles.
They would do 2 warmups- a 0.8 mile loop, stretch (doing stuff like hurdle stretches that screw with your knee) run another two laps, and then do a workout.
Occasionally, runs were supplemented with clearing the X-C course because "it's good for the upper body."
Nobody to my knowledge ever really ran faster than 16:40 for 5k (maybe 1 guy) and 4:30/10:00 for the 1600 and 32. There were a slew of guys around 2:00 for 800, but with all the track work, how could they not be?
Not too much fun.
