Ivan's father died unexpectedly just before he left for the States for these meets. His father was walking his dog, and collapsed. He had a big dog (not sure what kind) but the dog circled the body for some five hours before letting anyone year the body. It was terribly sad.
Ivan made the trip out of a sense of obligation to the meets. He's a tremendous athlete (Track & Field News ranked him #6 in the 1500m last year), and I'm sure he had planned to run better than he did.
