I'm making this prediction now, and if I'm wrong I'll man up and admit it:
Webb doesn't make the American 1500m squad for 2008.
As long as Lagat stays healthy, all other Americans are running for two places on the team. No way Webb pulls a run-and-hide on the others--not with Lagat in the field--and I don't think he has the close-quarters racing instincts to make it through.
His one chance: running a qualifying time in a different meet, and one of the top three in the USOT 1500 fails to get the time. BUT I think that the US will actually have more than three men meeting that (admittedly tough) standard.
I don't think Webb has a shot in the 5000--he's tried longer distances and didn't like them, so I don't think his heart would be in 5k/10k training and racing.
Given all the drillwork/flexibility/strength stuff he's alleged to do, I truly think his best shot at making the team would be in the steeple. He's not tall, but you don't have to be (Roelants, etc.). Of course, then the question would be whether he could make the final in the OG.
And no, I am not basing this on the Millrose results. (Anybody can have a bad race.) I'm basing it primarily on Webb's *successful* races of the recent past, and how he won them. That method won't cut it in the OT.
Anyway, that's what I think. By the way, I have tremendous respect for Webb's talent and ability and competitiveness. He's a wonderful runner who, unfortunately, has been "Holmanized" by Americans desperate for a world-level miler.
We do have one of those. His name's Lagat.
