Dude Pre is exalted b/c there were two movies and marketing campaign. Since he died young, he never got old. He never set his career on 12:58 only to find that "his foolish games" weren't good enough to medal.
Michael Jackson would still be the King if he pulled a DWI after Thriller. At least Elvis figured it out after a while.

?????
Why the Pre hate?? That dude is a god in American running - holding a multitude of records during his short career and going for broke all the time. What is wrong with that?? Yeah he was cocky - he was young - who among us that was a decent runner wasn't cocky??? He ran his mouth a bit too much before the Munich Games and finished out of the medals - but he tried to win the race and that is all you can expect of anyone....
Pre was exhalted before those two "B" level movies came out - if you really want to know about Pre - read Tom Jordan's book about him - that is a pretty accurate portrayal - but to say he is only exhalted because of two movies and a Nike Lovefest is inaccurate....
Just because the Pre worship fest is alive and well doesn't mean that others are just as deserving - can't say that it should be Stember but it could definitely be somebody.... That article was meant to be confrontational maybe to get people thinking of a new guard verses old guard approach to distance running.... Either way it was in poor taste and does the same trumpeting that the article criticises.... Stember?? I think he needs to do a bit more than erratic performances and brash talk before he can take his place at the table of the gods.....

Or pound a few Colt 45's and drive into rock then immortality.
Never ! My Pre poster, now framed; has been on my wall since 1974. First my room at home in high school; then my dorm room in college; it survived many moves through the years and is now on the wall in my office. It reminds me to 'never give up and always try my best'.

Thanks for the vid. I had him at about 2:06.5 at 800 meters, then 58.9, 58.3. His acceleration on the 3rd lap was ridiculous - like Webb in the WC, except Stember kept it going and won the race. But with his arm raise at the end, you could see the prick-ness even at a young age.
Yeah, raising an arm as you cross the finish line after winning a state championship is such a prick move.
the writing was crap so i really couldn't be bothered to finish reading
