I don't think anyone actually answered your question. And I don't really know the answer either, though I've sometimes wondered.
If you compare to running, just because your body gets used to running, say, 10 miles a day, it doesn't mean that after five years you'd have to be running 20 miles a day to get the same benefits you used to get from 10 miles.
I think what it comes down to is, if you're starting an activity that you're not used to, there will be a period -- which could last a few years -- where you're still adapting to the new activity. But after a while, you reach a steady state, where the constant but reasonably hard stimulus will keep you at certain level of strength or fitness, but not make any significant gains.
So if you set your goal at too light a stimulus (10 pushups a day), you'll eventually go back to being a twig. But if it's a reasonably hard goal that takes a while to achieve, you should hold onto your gains without having to constantly escalate your workload.
And I shave after showering. Definitely.
